Watch Repairer hourly rate calculator

This free calculator works out the hourly rate a freelance watch repairer should charge, starting from the income you need — then builds the per-job prices clients actually pay out of real bench hours. Nobody books “an hour of watch work”; they book a service, a crystal, a watch that runs again. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $88 an hour, $705 for a full day — and the conversions that price is built from: a battery change with reseal and pressure test is about half an hour at the bench, $44 of labour, a crystal replacement about an hour, $88 — and a full mechanical service carries about four hours of bench time, $352 of labour, with parts billed as their own lines on top.

The pricing reality for freelance watch repairers

Jobs are bought flat and earned by the hour, and the two only agree if the job price was built from the bench hours in the first place. A service quoted from the last service assumes the same movement, the same wear, the same state of the seals — and the watch on the bench has its own opinions. Inside the flat price sit the opening, the diagnosis, the strip-down, the cleaning, the timing checks across positions and the days a serviced watch spends on test before it goes home. A price copied from a price list carries all of that whether it covers it or not. Price the bench hour first, and the job price becomes an assembly: so many hours at the bench, at a rate that adds up.

This is a bench trade with a waiting room attached, and the wait is the pricing trap. Watches sit on test, parts sit on order, clients sit on estimates — while the bench stands rented and the hands can only work one movement at a time. The presets below use a 55% billable share: the hours stripping, cleaning, regulating and casing bill, and the estimates, the parts chasing and the client conversations take theirs first.

The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $52,000 target income, $14,000 a year of expenses — bench rent leads, with parts and materials stock, tools and timing equipment, insurance, training and certification, insured postage and marketing — a 22% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 55% billable time. The parts for a repair — a mainspring, a crystal, a movement ordered in — are billed to the job as their own lines, as the maths section explains. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $88 an hour.

Costs watch repairers forget to put in the rate

  • The test days. A serviced watch proves itself over days, not minutes: timing in several positions, power reserve checked, water resistance confirmed. That bench-adjacent time is skilled time — it belongs in the rate or the job price, and the one place it cannot live is nowhere.
  • The parts float. Crystals, crowns, gaskets, mainsprings and the occasional movement, bought before they are billed. Standard consumables ride inside the rate; a movement ordered for one client’s watch is that job’s line, priced when it is chosen — one client’s rare calibre should not be averaged into every other job.
  • The estimate that goes nowhere. Opening a watch, diagnosing honestly and quoting fairly takes real bench time, and some owners decline the repair. If estimates are always free, the paying jobs quietly fund the declined ones. A stated inspection fee, credited against the repair, is the honest shape many benches use.
  • Timing machines and tools. The timing machine, the pressure tester, the ultrasonic tank, case openers for a dozen systems and tweezers that are replaced, not sharpened back to life — bench equipment is bought for years and serviced for real money. A small annual line keeps it true; ignoring it turns a failure into a crisis mid-service.
  • The insured journey home. A client’s watch is often worth more than a month of your income, and it travels by insured post or is collected in person. Postage, insurance and secure packaging are real costs of the job — priced in, or billed as their own line, but never absorbed silently.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the watch repairer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 55% billable — that is 1,056 billable hours a year: the hours at the bench that clients can pay for, once the estimates, parts chasing and conversations have taken theirs.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $66,000 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 22% estimate, divide by 0.78 to get $84,615 — then add your profit margin to reach $93,077 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $88, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now translate the hour into the per-job prices clients actually pay. A battery change with reseal and pressure test is about half an hour: $44 of labour. A crystal replacement is about an hour, $88. A full mechanical service — stripped, cleaned, oiled, regulated and tested — is about four hours at the bench: $352 of labour. The gaskets, oils and standard consumables those hours use are inside the stock float the rate already carries; a mainspring, crystal or movement ordered for a specific watch sits on top as its own line.

Questions

Watch repairer rate questions

Because the job price is built out of bench hours whether you count them or not: the opening, the diagnosis, the strip-down, the cleaning, the regulation and the days on test. The hourly rate is how you check a price-list price against your own rent, your own parts bill and your own diary. Repairers who skip the check often find their busiest month was their worst paid, and the job prices, not the workload, were the reason.
Because the bench is not the whole week. For every hour on a movement there are estimates to write, parts to source, watches to log in and out and clients to talk through options at the pace clients decide things. Fifty-five percent is a realistic start for a solo repairer. A clear week of services bills a higher share; a week of estimates and restorations bills less. Set the number that matches your diary, not your best week.
The labour, yes — priced at your rate for the bench hours the job honestly takes. The parts themselves, no: a gasket set and a rare movement sit at honestly different prices, and one client’s calibre should not be averaged into every other job. Price the parts as their own line when they are ordered and the bench time at your rate, and the client sees exactly what their money bought — skill, and components.
