Irrigation Installer Hourly Rate Calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed irrigation installer should charge for their time, starting from the income you need, then builds the per-zone and per-visit prices clients actually pay out of the hours each job honestly holds. Clients buy a garden that waters itself — heads rising at dawn, beds soaked evenly, a lawn that stays green through a dry month — and they picture the sprinklers when they picture the cost. Inside that picture hides the system that makes it true: the zones worked out from pressure and flow, the trenches dug and the pipe laid level, the controller programmed zone by zone, and the two seasonal visits that open the system up in spring and put it to bed before the frost. The honest complication is the calendar: installs bunch into spring and early summer, the service rounds peak at start-up and shut-down, and deep winter goes quiet — a rate built on a flat year starves in February. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $96 an hour, $770 for a full day — and the work built from it: a spring start-up visit at about an hour and a half, $144; a zone repaired or added at about two hours, $193; a six-zone system installed across two days, $1,540 — with pipe, heads, valves and controllers billed as their own lines, never buried inside the hour.
The pricing reality for irrigation installers
Irrigation work is bought per zone and per visit, and earned in hydraulics before it is earned in digging. A zone is a calculation — how much water the supply actually delivers, how the heads share it, how the slope and soil drink it — and two gardens of the same size work hours apart: clay against sand, a long run against a short one, an old system to extend against a clean dig. Then the trade turns seasonal in a way indoor work never does: the same clients return every spring to be started up and every autumn to be winterised, and those dense little rounds are the year’s backbone between installs.
It is the plumbing under the garden, not a branch of the gardening round. A gardener plants, feeds and keeps a garden alive week to week; a landscape designer decides what the garden should become. The irrigation installer makes one system work: pressure, pipe, valves, heads and the controller that runs them. Lawns still get mown and beds still get planted by other hands — and where a job needs a new mains electrical circuit for a controller or pump, that circuit is an electrician’s work, said plainly before the quote, not discovered during it.
The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $52,000 target income, $11,000 a year of expenses — vehicle and fuel leads, with trencher hire and machinery wear, pipe, fittings and parts stock, the diagnostic and pressure-test kit, liability insurance, certification and training, phone and booking, quoting and admin, and marketing — a 25% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 50% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $96 an hour. The billable share is the weather’s shape: the install season compresses into the bright months, the service rounds bunch at its edges, and winter holds repairs and little else — half the year billing is a realistic start, not a failing.

Costs irrigation installers forget to put in the rate
- The quiet winter. The trade earns its year in about eight months and spends the other four being available. The rate has to carry the frost months inside the spring invoices — a price built as if July lasted all year is why February feels like a crisis.
- Trenching wear and hire. Trenchers, pipe pullers and the machines that open ground wear on soil and stone, and hire days land on the jobs that need them. Machinery is a line in these expenses, priced before the season, not a surprise inside it.
- The design given away. Testing pressure, measuring flow and zoning a garden on a free survey is the skilled core of the install, handed over for nothing. A client who takes your zone plan to a cheaper digger has spent your expertise and kept their money.
- Leaks and call-backs. The joint that weeps in week two is yours to revisit, and it belongs to the install. The pipe that bursts after a winterisation the client declined is a different conversation — and having it kindly, in advance, is part of the rate’s work.
- Parts on the van. Heads, valves, fittings and a spare controller held in stock are what turn a diagnosis into a finished repair in one visit. The shelf costs money while it sits; the second visit it saves costs more.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the irrigation installer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 50% billable — that is 960 billable hours a year: the installing, repairing and servicing clients can pay for, once quoting, travel and the quiet winter weeks have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $63,000 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $84,000 — then add your profit margin to reach $92,400 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $96, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now translate the hour into the prices clients actually buy. Zones and visits are the quoted units, built from hours: a spring start-up visit — pressurise, test every zone, set the controller — at about an hour and a half, $144 of labour; the autumn winterisation, blown through and drained down, the same hour and a half, $144; a zone repaired or added at about two hours, $193; a full six-zone system installed across two days, $1,540; a single day at $770. Pipe, heads, valves and controllers arrive on the invoice as themselves. Quoted that way, the client can see what they are buying: a system designed around their water, and a man who returns twice a year to keep it honest.
