Pest control technician hourly rate calculator

This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed pest control technician should charge, starting from the income you need — then converts it into the per-visit prices clients actually pay. Visits are the unit, priced per property — the hourly rate exists to check that those prices, across a week split between stops, driving and treatment records, add up to a living. With the honest presets below it lands near $78 an hour, $624 for a full day: a standard forty-five-minute recurring visit prices near $58.50, and a first visit with survey and treatment, around ninety minutes, near $117.

The pricing reality for freelance pest control technicians

Pest control is sold by the visit and won or lost on the route. Two operators can charge the same $58.50 a visit and run entirely different businesses: one does eight stops in two neighbourhoods, the other does five stops across a whole county. The work at each stop is identical — the driving between stops is where the profit leaks or holds. The preset below starts billable time at 66%, and the honest variable behind that number is not effort; it is density.

The recurring book is the margin engine. A monthly or quarterly route client is a visit already sold, at a known address, with a treatment history you already hold — no quoting, no selling, no survey visit to win it. One-off call-outs bill the same rate per hour and carry all of the acquisition cost. Pricing that treats the two alike quietly underprices the route and overworks the phone.

The numbers are starting presets, not a survey: a $58,000 target income, $13,600 a year of expenses — chemicals and the vehicle lead, alongside licence and insurance, equipment and protective gear, routing software and marketing — a 22% tax estimate and 66% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $78 an hour.

Costs pest control technicians forget to put in the rate

  • Drive time between stops. The route is the profit. Scattered stops tax every visit twice — once in fuel, once in hours the diary cannot sell — and no per-visit price survives a map it was never checked against.
  • Chemicals, storage and disposal. The product used at each stop is small; a year of product, plus compliant storage and the disposal of what expires, is not. It belongs in the expenses line at real prices, not guessed away.
  • Licence, insurance and treatment records. The paperwork of a regulated trade: licence renewals, insurance, and the treatment record written after every stop. Compliance is unpaid time that keeps you legal — and it takes real hours every week.
  • First-visit surveys. The inspection that sells the route is skilled diagnostic time: identifying the pest, the harbourage and the entry points. Priced nowhere, every new route client starts life as a small loss.
  • Protective kit and equipment wear. Sprayers, respirator filters, gloves and protective clothing are consumables with a safety job. They wear out on a schedule whether the diary is full or not.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the pest control presets — three weeks off, 40 hours a week, 66% billable — that is 1,294 billable hours a year: the hours at clients’ doors, once the driving between them has taken its share.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $71,600 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 22% estimate, divide by 0.78 to get $91,795 — then add your profit margin to reach $100,974 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $78, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now convert it into the units clients buy. A standard recurring treatment — about forty-five minutes at the property — prices at $58.50. A first visit with survey and initial treatment, around an hour and a half, is $117. And the route maths is the business: eight stops at $58.50 bill $468 in a day, while the same eight stops scattered across two days still bill $468 — against two days of fuel, vehicle wear and diary. Quote the per-visit price as the per-visit price — but build it from these hours, and price scattered one-offs knowing exactly what their driving costs you.

Disclaimer: This is a planning estimate, not tax advice. Tax rates, deductions and allowances vary by country, state and business structure. Enter the rate you expect to pay, and check significant decisions with a qualified accountant.
Questions

Pest control technician rate questions

Per visit, priced from the hour. Clients compare operators on the price of a treatment, not on a timer — but every visit has a time, plus its share of the drive, and the price should follow both: on these presets a forty-five-minute recurring visit is $58.50 and a ninety-minute first visit is $117. A price list by property size is fine, as long as every price on it was built from the time — and the travel — the visit really takes.
Because the stops are only part of the week. Driving the route, mixing and loading, writing treatment records and the admin of a recurring book take the rest, and none of it is billed stop by stop. Sixty-six percent is a realistic start for a reasonably dense route. If your stops are scattered, the honest share is lower and the rate has to know it; the real fix, when you can get it, is density — the same visits in fewer miles bill the same money in fewer hours.
Hour for hour they bill the same rate — and they are worth more anyway. A route client is pre-sold, at a known address, with a treatment history you already hold: no survey visit to win the work, no selling time, no gap in the diary. A one-off carries all of that cost into a single visit. Price both from the same rate, by all means — but when a one-off wants route prices without the route commitment, the discount being asked for is the acquisition cost you would be absorbing for free.
