Paving Installer Hourly Rate Calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed paving installer should charge for their time, starting from the income you need, then builds the per-square-metre labour prices clients actually pay out of the hours the work really holds. Clients rarely buy “an hour of paving”; they buy a driveway or a patio, priced by the square metre, and they judge it by the surface they can see. The honest secret of the trade is that most of the job is underground: excavation and the compacted base are well over half the labour — 58% of it in the worked example below — before a single block or slab shows its face. The blocks, sets, slabs and aggregate are materials, billed as their own lines; the rate prices your digging, your levels and your hours. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $92 an hour, $739 for a full day — and the work built from it: a 30 m² driveway at about 24 hours of labour, $2,218 — roughly $74 of labour in every square metre — of which the groundworks alone are about 14 hours, $1,294, and the laying about 10 hours, $924 — with blocks and aggregate never inside any of those figures.
The pricing reality for paving installers
Paving is bought by the project and quoted by the square metre, and earned in layers: dig out, dispose, lay and compact the base in passes, bed, lay the units, cut the edges, joint and finish. The square metre the client counts is the last of those layers. Two 30 m² driveways measure identically and work completely differently — one on sound, level ground with machine access, the other dug by hand past services nobody mapped. The metre cannot see that difference, which is why the honest quote is built from hours first and expressed per metre second.
It is also a different build from the one it is most often compared with. A concrete finisher pours and finishes a slab in a single weather-critical operation — the concrete finisher’s calculator prices that trade. A paving installer builds in layers across days, and the work can be lifted and relaid in sections if the ground moves. Different structure, different clock: the pour prices the day the concrete decides, while paving prices the groundworks the client will never see and the surface they will judge for twenty years.
The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $50,000 target income, $10,500 a year of expenses — vehicle and fuel leads, with digger hire and plant share, cutters, compactors and tools, liability insurance, spoil and waste disposal, blades and consumables, phone, quoting and admin, PPE and workwear, and training and tickets — a 25% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 50% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $92 an hour. The billable share is the weather talking: rain stops laying, saturates open ground and turns a planned week into a waiting one, and measuring, material runs and quoting take their share before the digger starts.

Costs paving installers forget to put in the rate
- The dig itself. Excavation to depth, and the spoil that comes out of it, are the job’s first days and its first disposal bills. A quote that starts counting at the base has already given away the groundworks — the largest single part of the work.
- The base. Aggregate laid and compacted in layers is invisible the day the job finishes and decisive every day after. Skimping it is how driveways dip and puddle by their second winter; pricing it properly is how yours do not.
- Drainage and falls. Water has to be given somewhere to go: falls set at the base, channels at the edges. Drainage priced in the quote is a line item; drainage skipped returns as a callback, a dispute and a relaid section at your expense.
- Cuts and edge restraints. Every border, curve and threshold is cutting hours, and every edge needs restraint to hold the field. The perimeter of a patio is small in metres and large in time — it is quoted as the time it is, not averaged away.
- Weather on open ground. A pour has one critical day; paving has a critical week, with open excavation that rain can flood and saturated ground that will not compact. Weather days are inside the billable share because they are inside every paving year.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the paving installer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 50% billable — that is 960 billable hours a year: the digging, basing and laying clients can pay for, once measuring, material runs, weather days and quoting have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $60,500 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $80,667 — then add your profit margin to reach $88,733 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $92, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now translate the hour into the prices clients actually buy. The square metre is the quoted unit, built from hours and shown in its layers: a 30 m² driveway holds about 24 hours of labour — $2,218, roughly $74 of labour in every square metre — split honestly between the groundworks, about 14 hours at $1,294, and the laying, about 10 hours at $924. A full day is $739, with blocks, sets, slabs and aggregate always billed as their own lines. Quoted that way, the client can see what they are actually buying: mostly a foundation, finished with a surface — and a cheaper quote that hides the groundworks stops looking cheaper.
