Fireplace Installer Hourly Rate Calculator

This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed fireplace installer should charge for their time, starting from the income you need, then builds the per-install prices clients actually pay out of the hours each job honestly holds. Clients buy a fire that draws — a stove glowing in the opening, a room warmed properly, a hearth that looks as if it was always there — and they picture the stove when they picture the cost. Inside that picture hides the system the fire depends on: the flue, whose condition decides everything and which nobody can see until it is inspected; the liner run down it from the roof; the opening rebuilt and the clearances to anything combustible measured twice; and the certificate at the end that says the whole thing is safe. The honest complication is that the most important part of this job is invisible — a price built on the visible parts alone is a guess wearing a quote’s clothes. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $92 an hour, $734 for a full day — and the work built from it: a survey and flue inspection at about an hour and a half, $138; a stove fitted into an existing, sound opening at about six hours, $551; a full install day, liner included, at $734 — with stoves, liners and hearth materials billed as their own lines from the first quote.

The pricing reality for fireplace installers

Fireplace work is bought per install and earned inside a chimney. The sequence is fixed by safety: inspect the flue, then decide — sweep and line it, rebuild the opening, or refuse the job the flue has made impossible. Every stage is certified work, because the product is not warmth but warmth that cannot poison or burn the house, and the paperwork at the end is part of what the client is paying for. Two houses with the same stove work a day apart on the flue alone: one draws a liner like a sleeve, the other hides a bend, a breach or a century of soot.

It is the fitting half of the chimney trade, where the chimney sweep works the keeping half. The sweep cleans and inspects flues as maintenance, year after year — and a sweep’s report is very often where an install begins. The installer fits the appliance and its flue system and signs for it: the stove, the liner, the hearth, the clearances, the certificate. The stonemason may build the surround, but the fire itself — what burns, what vents, what is certified safe — belongs to this trade alone.

The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $56,000 target income, $10,100 a year of expenses — vehicle and fuel leads, with ladders, roof access and safety kit, flue and fitting tools, certification, registration and training, liability insurance, the liner and components stock, phone, quoting and admin, and marketing — a 25% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 55% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $92 an hour. The billable share is the shape of certified work at height: surveys that end in honest refusals, quoting, travel and days the roof is closed by weather all take time the installs have to carry.

Easy to miss

Costs fireplace installers forget to put in the rate

  • Roof access and safety. The liner goes in from the top, which means ladders, roof ladders and the safety kit that makes chimney work survivable — and a pace at height that is deliberately slower. Access is time and equipment before it is anything else.
  • Certification and staying registered. The right to sign off an install is earned, examined and renewed, and it is a large part of what the client is buying. Training and registration are lines in these expenses, not evenings donated to the trade.
  • Insurance priced for fire. Premiums in this trade are set by what a bad install can burn, and they are correspondingly serious. The cover behind your certificate is a real cost of every job, carried in the rate where it belongs.
  • The flue nobody has seen. The survey finds the truth — the bend, the breach, the shared flue — and sometimes the truth ends the job. The inspection is priced either way; a quote written without it is a guess the installer’s margin has to defend.
  • Liners and parts on the shelf. Liner lengths, plates, cowls and terminals held in stock keep an install moving once the chimney is open. Money parked in components earns nothing on the shelf and its keep on the day the job would otherwise stall.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the fireplace installer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 55% billable — that is 1,056 billable hours a year: the surveying, fitting and certifying clients can pay for, once quoting, travel and weather at the chimney have taken theirs.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $66,100 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $88,133 — then add your profit margin to reach $96,947 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $92, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now translate the hour into the prices clients actually buy. The install is the quoted unit, built from hours: a survey and flue inspection — camera up the flue, draw tested, the verdict in writing — at about an hour and a half, $138 of labour; a stove fitted into an existing sound opening at about six hours, $551; a full install day with the liner run and the hearth finished, $734. Stoves, liners, hearth materials and cowls arrive on the invoice as themselves. Quoted that way, the client can see what they are buying: an inspected flue, a fitted fire and a certificate that means something — and the quote that never looked up the chimney stops looking cheaper.

Questions

Fireplace Installer rate questions

They are the fitting and keeping halves of one chimney. The sweep cleans and inspects flues as maintenance; the installer fits stoves and fireplace systems, lines flues and certifies the result. A sweep’s findings often start an install, and an installer’s finished work passes to the sweep for its yearly keeping — but the tickets, the kit and the liability are different trades’.
No. Stoves, liners, hearth materials and cowls are the installation’s hardware, billed as their own lines at cost or with a stated mark-up; the rate prices survey, fitting and certification. One premium stove buried in the hour would bend the price of every straightforward install around it.
Because the flue decides the install, and nobody knows its condition until it is inspected — at height, with a camera, by someone qualified to read what they see. The findings stand even when no install follows: a written verdict that a chimney is unsafe is a product, not a failed sale.
