Clock Repairer Hourly Rate Calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed clock repairer should charge for their time, starting from the income you need, then builds the per-service prices clients actually pay out of the hours each clock honestly holds. Clients bring you a clock — a mantle clock that stopped in March, a wall clock that strikes the wrong hour, a floor clock that has stood in the same hall for a century — and collect a running clock at one price. Inside that price hides an hour structure they never see: the strip-down, the cleaning, the worn pivots and bushings made good, the reassembling, and the days a movement spends running on the test stand before anyone dares call it done. Floor clocks add a shape no bench trade has: the clock cannot come to you, so you go to the clock, and the visit itself is working time. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $74 an hour, $593 for a full day — and the work built from it: a mantle clock service at about three hours of labour, $223; a wall clock service at about two hours, $148; a floor clock serviced in the client’s hall at about four hours door to door, $297; a regulation visit at about an hour, $74 — with springs, bushings, cables and glass billed as their own lines on every job.
The pricing reality for clock repairers
Clock work is bought per clock and quoted after a look, and earned in stages: strip the movement, clean it, repair the wear — pivot holes bushed, pivots polished, a mainspring judged honestly — reassemble, oil, and then wait, because a clock is only repaired when it has run true on the stand for days. Two clocks of identical make work completely differently when one has been serviced every decade and the other has run dry for fifty years, which is why the honest quote is built from hours first and expressed per service second — and why an antique is never priced from a menu at all: it is assessed first and quoted with the movement open, because the case tells you nothing about the century inside it.
It is a different trade from the watch repairer’s, though the two are often shelved together. A watch is a balance-wheel movement small enough to hide under a lens, carried to the bench and serviced in tasks measured in minutes and single hours. A clock is a pendulum or weight-driven movement built at furniture scale: its wear is bushed, not gasketed; its services run to half-days; and its largest examples cannot travel at all, so the repairer travels instead — house calls are a line of this trade’s week, not an exception to it.
The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $44,000 target income, $9,400 a year of expenses — workshop bench and rent share leads, with clock tools, lathe and bushing equipment, the parts float, vehicle and fuel for house calls, liability insurance, phone and admin, marketing, training and reference, and oils and cleaning consumables — a 25% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 55% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $74 an hour. The billable share is the waiting talking: movements soaking, clocks running on the test stand under observation and parts being hunted for discontinued movements all hold hours no invoice itemises, and every service pays for a slice of them.

Costs clock repairers forget to put in the rate
- House-call travel. The hour in the van to a floor clock and the hour back bill nobody directly — they are inside the billable share, and a week of house calls priced as bench time is a week quietly underpaid.
- The test stand. A serviced movement runs under observation for days before it goes home. That stand space is bench you cannot sell twice, and the regulation tweaks scattered across those days are skilled minutes no single invoice names.
- Parts hunting. Discontinued movements need parts found, made or adapted — phone calls, forums, a donor movement bought for one wheel. The hunt is working time, and it belongs in the job’s hours, said out loud at assessment.
- Heirloom liability. Clients hand you clocks worth more than your van, heavy with a meaning money cannot replace. Insurance for pieces in your care and in transit is not an optional line — it is the price of being trusted with them.
- The settling visit. A clock that runs true on the stand can sulk in a different hall — a floor off level, a beat to reset. The short return visit inside a service is expected, priced in, and never a surprise to either side.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the clock repairer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 55% billable — that is 1,056 billable hours a year: the bench and house-call time clients can pay for, once observing, sourcing and quoting have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $53,400 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $71,200 — then add your profit margin to reach $78,320 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $74, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now translate the hour into the prices clients actually buy. The service is the quoted unit, built from hours: a mantle clock service at about three hours, $223 of labour; a wall clock service at about two hours, $148; a floor clock serviced in the client’s hall at about four hours door to door, $297; a regulation visit at about an hour, $74; a full day at $593. Springs, bushings, cables and glass arrive on the invoice as themselves, at cost or with a stated mark-up. Quoted that way, the client can see what they are buying: a clock that runs and keeps time — and an antique quoted only after assessment stops looking expensive beside a menu price that was guessed.
