Tattoo Artist hourly rate calculator

This free calculator works out the hourly rate a freelance tattoo artist should charge, starting from the income you need — then converts it into the per-piece prices clients actually pay. Pieces are the unit: priced by size and complexity, with the hour as the check underneath — and much of the week is drawing, consultations and admin, not needle time. With the honest presets below it lands near $104 an hour, $834 for a full day: a small piece sits at the one-hour minimum of $104, and a palm-size piece at about two and a half hours prices near $260.

The pricing reality for freelance tattoo artists

Needle time is the part of tattooing clients see, and it is not most of the work. A custom piece is drawn before it is tattooed — sometimes redrawn — the consultation happens before the booking, and the messages, healed photos and booking admin run on after the piece is done. An artist whose prices only count the hours under the needle is giving the drawing desk away free.

Studio economics sit inside the expenses line here. Many artists work on a studio split or pay chair rent; these presets assume chair rent plus your own supplies — $5,400 a year covering chair rent, needles and inks, machine care, insurance and booking software. On a percentage split instead, the studio's cut is a cost of earning too: test it in the expenses field and watch what the piece prices have to be.

The preset below starts billable time at 45%: needle time bills, but drawing, consultations, messages, set-up and clean-down do not. The numbers are starting presets, not a survey: a $56,000 target income, $5,400 a year of expenses and 45% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $104 an hour.

Costs tattoo artists forget to put in the rate

  • Drawing time. Custom work is designed before it is tattooed, and redesigns happen. Those hours are skilled work — if the rate does not carry them, the client who books the most custom work gets the biggest discount.
  • Consultations and no-shows. Consultations are unpaid by custom, and a no-show burns a booked slot that took drawing time to prepare. A deposit policy protects the slot; the rate has to soften the ones that still slip.
  • Consumables per piece. Needles, ink, barriers, gloves and aftercare supplies are spent on every single piece, including the small ones — a reason the minimum charge exists.
  • Set-up and clean-down. Sterile preparation and breakdown between clients is real time inside every appointment, and it is never needle time. Short pieces carry the same set-up as long ones.
  • Portfolio and messages. Photographing healed work, answering enquiries and managing the booking book are the shop window and the diary in one. They fill next month's chair; they bill nothing this month.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the tattoo artist presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 45% billable — that is 864 billable hours a year: the needle hours left once drawing, consultations and admin have taken theirs.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $61,400 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $81,867 — then add your profit margin to reach $90,053 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $104, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now convert it into the units clients buy. Small pieces sit at a one-hour minimum — $104 — because the set-up, consumables and clean-down cost the same whether the needle runs for twenty minutes or an hour; a minimum charge is standard practice for exactly that reason. A palm-size piece at about two and a half hours prices at $260. A half-day session at about four hours is $416. Quote the piece price as the piece price — but build it from these hours, so a week of custom drawing pays like the work it is.

Disclaimer: This is a planning estimate, not tax advice. Tax rates, deductions and allowances vary by country, state and business structure. Enter the rate you expect to pay, and check significant decisions with a qualified accountant.
Questions

Tattoo Artist rate questions

Per piece, priced from the hour. Clients buy a finished piece, not a timer — but the price should follow the time the piece takes, drawing included: on these presets, a small piece sits at the one-hour minimum of $104, a palm-size piece at about two and a half hours is $260, and a half-day session is $416. Large multi-session work is often quoted by the hour or the session — either way, the hour underneath is this one.
Because for a custom artist the needle is the minority of the craft. Drawing and redrawing designs, consultations, booking messages, set-up and clean-down, photographing healed work — none of it is billed by the hour, and together it is more than half the week. Flash-only artists who draw less can raise the percentage; heavy custom work may need to lower it.
Treat both as a cost of earning, because that is what they are. Chair rent is a fixed weekly cost and sits in the expenses preset here. A percentage split takes its cut off every piece, so the same income needs higher piece prices — model it by adding the year's expected split to the expenses field and check the rate still adds up. If it does not, the prices, not just the hours, have to move.
