Fence Installer Hourly Rate Calculator

This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed fence installer should charge for their time, starting from the income you need, then builds the metre, panel-run and day prices clients actually pay out of the hours the work really holds. Clients rarely buy “an hour of fencing”; they buy a boundary that stands straight, gates that swing true and a run finished in days, not weekends. The posts, panels and gravel boards are materials, billed as their own line, and taking away the old fence is a stated cost of the job — the rate prices your setting-out, your levels and your hours, in the trade where the metre is easy to measure and easy to underprice: the metre counts the run and forgets the corners, the digging and the ground. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $89 an hour, $709 for a full day — and the jobs built from it: a 15-metre garden fence at about seven hours of your labour, $620 of labour, about $41 a metre — a two-day run at $1,418 of labour — with the posts and panels themselves never inside either figure.

The pricing reality for fence installers

A fence is bought by the metre and the run, and earned by the hour and the ground. Inside the price sit the measuring, the digging — soil one garden, clay, roots and rubble the next — the posts set true, the gravel boards, the panels and the gates hung to swing. Two runs of identical length can be a day apart in labour, and a metre price copied from the installer across town carries their ground and their gardens whether it covers yours or not. Price the hour first, and metres and runs become assemblies of the same honest number.

Materials and disposal are separate honesties. Posts, panels, gravel boards and gate hardware are bought for the job and billed as their own line — at cost or with a stated mark-up, agreed up front. The old fence is the same: taking it down, loading it and tipping it is a cost of that job, stated on the quote, not absorbed into your labour, where it would quietly tax every short run to subsidise the long ones. Your rate prices your day: your setting-out, your levels and your hours on the tools.

The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $52,000 target income, $11,800 a year of expenses — vehicle and fuel leads, with post-hole auger, saws and tools, liability insurance, old-fence disposal, blades, bits and consumables, phone, quoting and admin, protective kit, and training and tickets — a 25% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 55% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $89 an hour. The presets are annual because fencing is seasonal: spring books out solid, winter ground fights back, and the rate has to carry the year, not the busiest month.

Costs fence installers forget to put in the rate

  • The ground. Clay, roots, rubble and old concrete footings turn a metre of digging into an hour of it. A metre price assumes average ground; state in the quote what happens when the ground is not average, before the auger finds out.
  • The old fence. Taking down the existing run, loading it and paying the tip fee is real time and real money on most replacements. Quoted as its own line it is a cost of the job; left unquoted, it comes straight out of your labour.
  • The corners and the gates. A straight run prices kindly by the metre; corners, steps down a slope and gates are where the hours actually live. Count them as their own items or the metre lies about every interesting garden.
  • The return for the gate. Gates drop, latches settle and posts shift a fraction as the ground dries. A short adjustment visit held inside the price is cheaper than a reputation for fences that will not close by August.
  • The rained-off week. Fencing is outdoor work booked weeks ahead; a lost week does not vanish, it compresses into the next one. The billable share and the margin are how the rate pre-pays the weather you cannot invoice.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the fence installer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 55% billable — that is 1,056 billable hours a year: the digging, setting and hanging clients can pay for, once measuring up, quoting, travel, supply runs and weather days have taken theirs.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $63,800 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $85,067 — then add your profit margin to reach $93,573 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $89, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now translate the hour into the prices clients actually buy. A full day is the day rate, $709. A 15-metre garden fence — ten panels, eleven posts — is about seven hours of your labour: $620, which is about $41 a metre of labour, with the posts, panels and boards billed separately. A two-day run is $1,418 of labour, and a half day is $354 — which is how the single replacement panel should be priced, by the half day or the hour, never by a metre that forgets the setup, the travel and the trip to the tip. What never works is copying the per-metre price from the installer across town: their ground, their gardens and their diary are not yours.

Questions

Fence Installer rate questions

No — keep all three visible. Posts, panels, gravel boards and gate hardware are materials, billed as their own line at cost or with a stated mark-up. Taking away the old fence is a cost of the job, tip fee included, named on the quote. Buried inside a rate, they make short runs look dear and long ones quietly loss-making. The rate stays for what it should price: your setting-out, your levels and your hours.
Build the metre from the hour, never the other way round. Time a known run honestly — on these presets, 15 metres takes about seven hours, $620 of labour, so the labour inside the metre is about $41 — then quote the metre with the materials separate, and count corners, gates and slopes as their own items. And hold a minimum: one replacement panel is an hour and a trip, priced by the hour or the half day, not by a metre that forgets the drive.
Price the risk before you meet it. State in the quote that the metre assumes diggable ground, and that rock, rubble or old concrete footings are charged at the hourly rate for the extra time they take. Clients accept the clause when it is written down before the auger starts; what they resist is a surprise after it stops. The alternative — absorbing every bad hole — makes your easiest gardens subsidise your hardest.
