Gutter Installer Hourly Rate Calculator

This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed gutter installer should charge for their time, starting from the income you need, then builds the metre-run, whole-house and repair-call prices clients actually pay out of the hours the work really holds. Clients rarely buy “an hour of guttering”; they buy a house that sheds water properly — runs that fall the right way, joints that do not drip and downpipes that stay on the wall. The guttering, brackets and downpipe are materials, billed as their own line; the rate prices your head for heights, your falls and your hours, in the trade where half of every job is getting safely to the eaves and back down. A per-metre price forgets the ladder moves, the corners and the two-storey reality. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $86 an hour, $684 for a full day — and the jobs built from it: a 20-metre house run at about three hours of your labour, $257, about $13 a metre of labour — a repair call at the one-hour minimum, $86 — with the guttering itself never inside either figure.

The pricing reality for gutter installers

A gutter run is bought by the metre and earned by the access. Inside the price sit the measuring, the setting of falls, the cutting and jointing, the corners, the outlets and the downpipes — and between every few metres of it, the ladder coming down, moving and going back up. Two houses with the same metre count can be half a day apart: a one-storey cottage and a three-storey terrace are different jobs wearing the same measurement. A rate copied from the installer across town carries their housing stock whether it covers yours or not. Price the hour first, and runs and houses become assemblies of the same honest number.

The height is a cost, not a detail. Working at eaves height is why the insurance in these presets is a serious line and why the ladders and access kit are real capital, maintained and replaced on a cycle. Where a run cannot be reached honestly from your own ladders — over a conservatory, a porch or a slope — tower or scaffold hire is a cost of that job, stated on the quote. Absorbed into your rate instead, it would make every straightforward house subsidise the awkward ones, and your price would stop describing either.

The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $46,000 target income, $10,000 a year of expenses — vehicle and fuel leads, with ladders, access equipment and tools, liability insurance, sealants, fixings and consumables, phone, quoting and admin, training and working-at-height tickets, waste disposal, and protective kit — a 25% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 50% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $86 an hour. The billable share is the honest part: on access work, much of the day is spent getting to the work.

Costs gutter installers forget to put in the rate

  • The ladder moves. Every few metres the ladder comes down, moves along and goes back up — and corners double it. On a long run the moves can rival the fitting itself. They are inside your quoted hours or they are donated.
  • The scaffold conversation. Some eaves cannot be reached honestly from a ladder. Tower or scaffold hire is a cost of that job, stated on the quote at booking; absorbing it turns your hardest houses into your worst-paid work.
  • The old guttering. Stripping moss-filled, perished runs and disposing of them is real time and a tip cost on most replacements. Quoted as part of the job, it is covered; left unquoted, it comes out of your labour.
  • Sealant, brackets and the small stuff. Joints, unions, outlets, screws and sealant leave in your van by the box — small on any one job, real across a year. They sit in the expenses presets, and replacements fitted from your stock should be quoted as such.
  • The weather window. Guttering is sealed in the dry and best fitted in the dry; a wet week stalls the diary while the drips that booked you keep dripping. The margin carries the stalled days the rate cannot invoice.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the gutter installer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 50% billable — that is 960 billable hours a year: the fitting and sealing clients can pay for, once ladder moves, measuring up, quoting, travel and weather days have taken theirs.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $56,000 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $74,667 — then add your profit margin to reach $82,133 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $86, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now translate the hour into the prices clients actually buy. A full day is the day rate, $684. A typical house run — 20 metres of gutter with downpipes — is about three hours of your labour: $257, which is about $13 a metre of labour, with the guttering and any scaffold billed separately. A half day is $342. And the leak repair is priced by the call, not the metre: the one-hour minimum, $86, because most of that job is the travel, the ladder and the diagnosis. What never works is copying the per-metre price from the installer across town: their access, their housing stock and their diary are not yours.

Questions

Gutter Installer rate questions

No. Guttering, brackets and downpipe are materials, billed as their own line at cost or with a stated mark-up. Access beyond your own ladders — a tower or scaffold for the awkward eave — is a cost of that job, named on the quote. Buried in a rate, they make simple runs subsidise difficult houses, and your price stops describing either. The rate prices your fitting, your falls and your hours.
Build the metre from your hours on a house you know. On these presets a 20-metre run with downpipes takes about three hours — $257 of labour, about $13 a metre — because the figure carries the measuring, the ladder moves and the corner work with it. Then quote the metre with materials and access as their own lines. A metre price copied from a one-storey cottage will not survive a three-storey terrace; price the access you can see.
Price them as the different work they are. A repair call is mostly travel, ladder and diagnosis, so it carries a minimum — an hour on these presets, $86 — whatever the fix turns out to be. Cleaning is a separate round with its own rhythm, closer to a maintenance visit than an install. Installing is measured work built from your rate. One blended price for all three underpays the calls and overprices the runs.
