Mobile Car Detailer hourly rate calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate a freelance mobile car detailer should charge, starting from the income you need — then builds the package prices clients actually pay out of real working hours. Nobody books “an hour of detailing”; they book a full detail, a maintenance wash, a car that smells like a car again. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $69 an hour, $555 for a full day — and the conversions that price is built from: a full inside-and-out detail is about three hours, $207 of labour, a maintenance wash and vacuum about one hour, $69 — with machine polishing priced from the same hour and coating products billed as their own lines on top.
The pricing reality for freelance mobile car detailers
Packages are bought flat and earned by the hour, and the two only agree if the package price was built from the hours in the first place. A “full detail” is not a product; it is three hours of labour, a shelf of chemicals and a drive, wearing a product’s name. The package price copied from the valeter across town carries all of that whether it covers it or not — and the car that turns out to be a dog kennel on wheels takes the extra hour either way. Price the working hour first, and the package becomes an assembly: so many hours at the polisher and the extractor, at a rate that adds up.
This is a trade done in other people’s driveways, and the gaps between driveways are the pricing trap. The van, the water tank, the generator, the drive to the next postcode — none of it appears on the package menu, and all of it is inside the day. The presets below use a 60% billable share: the hours with a cloth or a machine in hand bill, and the travel and set-up take theirs first. A day stacked in one street bills far more than the same packages scattered across a county.
The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $46,000 target income, $11,800 a year of expenses — the van and fuel lead, with chemicals and consumables, equipment, insurance, marketing and booking software — a 22% tax estimate, three weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 60% billable time. The three weeks off, not four, is the honest seasonal shape of this trade: the dark wet months are when a mobile detailer can afford to stop. Coating products beyond the working chemical float are billed to the job as their own lines, as the maths section explains. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $69 an hour.

Costs mobile car detailers forget to put in the rate
- The drive to the driveway. Mobile means the workshop has wheels and the wheels burn fuel between every job. Two details in one street are a good day; the same two details forty minutes apart are a noticeably worse one, at exactly the same package prices — unless the rate already knows about the road.
- Chemicals are rent. Shampoo, fallout remover, compounds, dressings, clay, coatings prep — every car drinks some of all of them and almost no package itemises any of them. Pennies per car, thousands per year, and they belong in the rate because they will certainly be in the work.
- The machine shelf. Polishers, extractors, steamers, generators and pressure washers wear out, clog and fail on a schedule set by use, not by your diary. The replacement fund is a real cost of this year’s work, priced this year — not a surprise the year the extractor dies.
- Weather and water. A mobile detailer works outdoors at the mercy of the forecast, and some driveways have no tap and no power. Rained-off days still carry the van’s costs; the margin across the good weeks is what carries them, which is what the margin is for.
- The state of the car. Pet hair, sand, sick and the archaeology of a family car can double the inside hours of a “standard” package. The rate cannot fix a misjudged car, but a price built from hours can at least name the extra hour — a flat price just absorbs it, silently.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the mobile car detailer presets — three weeks off, 40 hours a week, 60% billable — that is 1,176 billable hours a year: the hours with a cloth, a polisher or an extractor in hand that clients can pay for, once the drives between driveways have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $57,800 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 22% estimate, divide by 0.78 to get $74,103 — then add your profit margin to reach $81,513 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $69, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now translate the hour into the package prices clients actually pay. A full inside-and-out detail is about three hours — three hours at $69 is $207 of labour. A maintenance wash and vacuum is about one hour, $69. A full day of machine polishing and paint correction is the day rate, $555. The chemicals those hours consume are inside the rate already; a ceramic coating’s product is not — it is bought for one car, at a price the client chose, and it sits on the invoice as its own line next to the hours that applied it.
