Locksmith hourly rate calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate a freelance locksmith should charge, starting from the income you need — then converts it into the per-callout prices clients actually pay. Callouts are short and scattered: twenty minutes at a door, then forty minutes back across town, then a wait for the next call. The gaps are not bad luck; they are the trade's shape, and the rate is where they get priced. With the honest presets below it lands near $99 an hour, $790 for a full day: the first hour on site prices near $99, a half-hour job near $49.50, and rekeying a whole home at about two hours near $198.
The pricing reality for freelance locksmiths
A locksmith sells readiness as much as work. Calls arrive unpredictably — a lockout at noon, nothing until four, a rekey across town at five — so hours are held open for jobs that may not come, and the jobs themselves are short. A rate built as if the week were solid booked hours will always come up short against a week of fragments.
Emergency and night callouts commonly price at a premium over the day rate — half as much again, or double, is common practice — because the client is buying your availability at an unsocial hour, not just your minutes at the door. A premium only makes sense built on an honest base, though; this calculator builds the base.
The preset below starts billable time at 45%: time at the door bills, but travel between scattered jobs, waiting on call, stocking the van and admin do not. Licensing and insurance sit inside the expenses preset from day one — where the trade is licensed they are a cost of starting, not an optional extra — alongside key machines and blanks, a stocked vehicle and tools, at $4,200 a year. The numbers are starting presets, not a survey: a $54,000 target income and 45% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $99 an hour.

Costs locksmiths forget to put in the rate
- Availability itself. Hours held open for calls that may not come are a real cost of this trade. They are priced in the billable percentage — the one dial most locksmiths never set.
- The stocked vehicle. Blanks, cylinders and common locks carried on the van are money sitting in stock so a callout finishes in one visit, not two.
- Machines and tools. Key-cutting and programming kit is expensive, and it dates quickly as locks and vehicles change. The expenses line renews it steadily.
- Travel between scattered jobs. Short jobs mean many journeys. A wide patch lowers the billable share — so price for the patch you actually cover, not the one you hope for.
- Insurance and licensing. Where the trade is licensed, the licence, insurance and checks are a cost of starting. They sit inside the expenses preset from the first year, not the first renewal.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the locksmith presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 45% billable — that is 864 billable hours a year: the hours actually spent at clients' doors, once travel, waiting on call and the admin between scattered jobs have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $58,200 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $77,600 — then add your profit margin to reach $85,360 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $99, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now convert it into the units clients buy. A half-hour job is $49.50. The first hour on site is $99. Rekeying a whole home at about two hours is $198. State the callout as a fee that includes the first stretch of labour, then the rate after — but build it from these hours, so a scattered week pays like the availability it sells.
