Audio engineer hourly rate calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate a freelance audio engineer should charge, starting from the income you need — with the gear cupboard counted, because a microphone locker is money sitting in foam cases and it has to earn. Engineers sell the same hours in three costumes: the studio day, the per-song mix, the live sound call. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $87 an hour, $696 for a full studio day — and a song mixed properly over six hours prices near $522.
The pricing reality for freelance audio engineers
Audio engineering is not music production, and the pricing should not borrow its shape. A producer is paid to create the record; you are paid to capture it cleanly and finish it — recording, editing, mixing, mastering, live sound. Clients buy that three ways: a day in the studio, a price per song, or a call for an event. All three are your hours wearing different clothes, and each fails the same way when it is priced by habit instead of from the hours: the day rate that forgets setup, the per-song price that forgets revisions, the call fee that forgets the get-out at midnight.
The capital is the second reality. Microphones, interfaces, monitoring, treatment, the software stack — a serious cupboard represents years of income sitting in a room, being replaced on a cycle whether sessions are booked or not. A rate built only on labour prices the hands and gives the cupboard away free. The presets below carry the room and the gear inside the expenses, which is where they have to live if the rate is going to replace them when they wear out.
The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $62,000 target income, $10,600 a year of expenses — studio space and the microphone and monitoring cupboard lead, with software, insurance, training and marketing — a 22% tax estimate and 60% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $87 an hour.

Costs audio engineers forget to put in the rate
- Gear replacement and maintenance. Microphones get dropped, interfaces age out, monitors and headphones wear, cables fail mid-session. The cupboard is replaced on a cycle out of the same rate that pays you — if the cycle is not in the expenses, it comes out of your income instead.
- Setup, teardown and session prep. The hour before the band arrives and the hour after they leave: patching, line checks, recall sheets, comping notes, printing mixes. Sessions are quoted from doors-open; the work is not.
- Backups and the session archive. Drives, cloud copies and the discipline behind them. The only copy of a client’s record sitting on one ageing drive is a liability you carry for years — storage is a real, recurring cost of the trade.
- Revision rounds beyond the stated ones. A mix price quietly assumes a number of revision rounds. The fourth “tiny tweak” is unbilled engineering unless the quote named the rounds — and naming them is free.
- The room itself. Rent or studio share, treatment, power, the chair that does not squeak on a vocal take. If clients record in your space, the space is part of what the rate is carrying.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the audio engineer presets — three weeks off, 40 hours a week, 60% billable — that is 1,176 billable hours a year: the session and mix hours clients can pay for, once setup, backups, quotes and maintenance have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $72,600 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 22% estimate, divide by 0.78 to get $93,077 — then add your profit margin to reach $102,385 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $87, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now sell the hours in the costumes clients buy. A full studio day is eight of them: $696. A song mixed properly — six hours of mixing with the stated revision rounds inside it — prices at $522, quoted as one song price so the client buys a finished mix, not a meter. A half-day of tracking or editing is $348. Quote the unit the client understands, and build every unit from the same hour, so the day rate, the song price and the call fee can never quietly contradict each other.
