Pet Groomer hourly rate calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate a freelance pet groomer should charge, starting from the income you need — then converts it into the per-dog prices clients actually book. Appointments are the unit: one dog at a time, and the honest price follows the time the dog takes — its size, its coat and the state both arrive in. With the honest presets below it lands near $68 an hour, $547 for a full grooming day: a standard groom at about an hour and a half prices near $102, and a large double-coated dog at about two hours near $136.
The pricing reality for freelance pet groomers
Grooming looks like a chain of appointments, but each link is a different length. A bath, dry, clip and nail trim might take forty minutes on a small, well-kept dog and two hours on a large double coat that arrives matted. The diary books slots; the dogs decide how long the day actually runs — and a day priced on hoped-for times quietly underpays every hard dog in it.
Mobile groomers carry one more cost, the same one priced into the dog trainer presets: travel between clients. A salon day is appointments back to back; a mobile day is appointments plus the road between them, and those miles appear on nobody's invoice unless the rate puts them there.
The preset below starts billable time at 55%: grooms bill, but cleaning between dogs, laundry, bookings, no-show gaps and — for mobile groomers — the road take the rest. The numbers are starting presets, not a survey: a $46,000 target income, $3,200 a year of expenses — kit and blade care, shampoos and consumables, laundry, insurance and booking software are the shape of it — and 55% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $68 an hour.

Costs pet groomers forget to put in the rate
- Cleaning between dogs. Baths, tables and tools are cleaned and disinfected between appointments. It is basic health practice, and it is unpaid minutes, several times a day.
- Blade and kit care. Clippers, blades and shears need sharpening, servicing and replacing on a steady cycle. Dull kit makes every groom slower and worse.
- Coat surprises. A matted or overdue coat can double the job. Pricing by the time a dog is expected to take — and saying so at booking — keeps the day honest.
- No-shows and gaps. A missed appointment leaves a hole in a chain that cannot be re-sold at an hour's notice. The rate has to soften a few of them a month.
- Travel, if you are mobile. Fuel, parking and the road between clients belong in the day's maths, exactly as they do for a dog trainer — nobody else will put them there.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the pet groomer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 55% billable — that is 1,056 billable hours a year: the grooming hours left once cleaning, bookings and the gaps between appointments have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $49,200 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $65,600 — then add your profit margin to reach $72,160 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $68, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now convert it into the units clients buy. A quick bath and tidy at about forty-five minutes prices at $51. A standard groom at about an hour and a half is $102. A large, double-coated dog at about two hours is $136. Quote the per-dog price as the per-dog price — but build it from these hours, so a week of big coats pays like the work it is.
