Plumber hourly rate calculator

This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed plumber should charge, starting from the income you need — then converts it into the per-job and call-out prices clients actually pay. Jobs are the unit, priced per task — the hourly rate exists to check that those prices, across a week split between the wrench, the road and the merchant counter, add up to a living. With the honest presets below it lands near $131 an hour, $1,046 for a full day: the first hour on site prices near $131, a two-hour job near $262, and a burst pipe at 2am is a fee plus a premium first hour, agreed on the phone.

The pricing reality for freelance plumbers

A plumber’s week splits between the wrench and the road: looking at jobs, pricing them, standing in merchants’ queues, and driving between all three. Only the time on the tools bills. The preset below starts billable time at 60% — deliberately low, because small-job plumbing generates more unpaid looking, quoting and fetching per billed hour than almost any other trade, and a rate built on a fantasy week is a pay cut with extra steps.

The licence works the same way here as it does for electricians: a moat that charges rent. Licence fees, liability insurance, drain machines and the licence itself are the cost of being the person a homeowner can legally and safely call at midnight. The parts stock deserves its own word: money sitting in the van in fittings, valves and pipe is money not in the bank, and it only earns its keep if the rate carries it.

The numbers are starting presets, not a survey: an $88,000 target income, $18,200 a year of expenses — van and fuel lead, alongside tools and drain equipment, licence and insurance, parts stock, permits and marketing — a 24% tax estimate and 60% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $131 an hour.

Costs plumbers forget to put in the rate

  • Quotes that go nowhere. Lifting floorboards, tracing pipe runs and pricing work you never win is the trade’s invisible shift. Win one job in three quotes and the two lost ones are paid for by the winner — or by you.
  • Parts stock sitting in the van. Capital asleep in fittings and valves, some of which will be the wrong size on the day. Stock turns over slowly and occasionally walks; the rate, not your savings, should carry the cost of holding it.
  • The merchant run. The mid-job trip for the one fitting the van did not have, and the queue when you get there. It belongs to the job entirely — and appears on no invoice unless you price it in.
  • Licence and liability insurance. Real money, due in full or empty months alike. Water does more damage than almost anything else in a house; the cover that stands behind your work is a core cost of the trade, not an optional extra.
  • Callbacks and warranty returns. The drip that comes back, the joint that weeps a month later. Standing behind the work is right — and it is unpaid time that comes out of the billable week, so the rate has to know it happens.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the plumber presets — three weeks off, 40 hours a week, 60% billable — that is 1,176 billable hours a year: the hours on the tools, once quotes, merchant runs and driving have taken theirs.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $106,200 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 24% estimate, divide by 0.76 to get $139,737 — then add your profit margin to reach $153,711 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $131, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now convert it into the units clients buy. The first hour on site is $131. A defined job prices from the same hour: the labour in a like-for-like water-heater swap, around two hours, is $262, with the unit and parts on top. A half-day of pipework is $524 and a full day is $1,046. Open-ended fault-finding — the leak that hides — stays hourly with a first-hour minimum, because nobody can honestly fix-price a problem nobody has found yet. Emergencies are a structure agreed on the phone: a call-out fee plus a premium first hour — at time-and-a-half on these presets, $196.50 — quoted before the van moves. The figures illustrate the shape, built from the rate above; set your own call-out fee where your market and your sleep say it belongs.

Questions

Plumber rate questions

Because small-job plumbing leaks unpaid time at every joint: looking at jobs, written quotes, merchant runs and driving across town between forty-minute fixes. Sixty percent is a realistic start for a solo plumber on mixed work. If your diary is mostly booked installations, test a higher share against a real month; if it is mostly emergencies and small repairs, the honest share may be lower — and the rate has to carry that, or the year quietly underpays you.
As a structure agreed before you drive: a call-out fee that pays for the trip and the hour of the night, the first hour at a premium — time-and-a-half on these presets is $196.50 — then your standard rate. Quoted on the phone, it protects both sides: the client knows the shape of the bill before the water is even off, and you are not negotiating terms in a flooded kitchen. The standard rate at 2am makes your most disruptive work your worst paid.
Per job where the job is definable, per hour where it is not — both priced from the same rate. A water-heater swap or a bathroom first-fix has a knowable time, and a per-job price built from it — $262 of labour for a two-hour swap on these presets — is what clients can compare. Fault-finding has no knowable time until the fault is found, so it stays hourly with a stated first-hour minimum. The mistake is fixed prices for unknown problems: every surprise lands on you.
