Interpreter hourly rate calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate an interpreter should charge, starting from the income you need — then converts it into the half-day and day minimums this trade actually books. Interpreting is live and scheduled: an assignment claims the travel, the prep and the hours around it, not just the minutes you are speaking. With the honest presets below it lands near $112 an hour: a half-day minimum of $448 and a full day at $899.
The pricing reality for freelance interpreters
Interpreters sell presence at a fixed time — in a room, on a ward round, across a negotiation table or on a video call. The work is spoken and live, so it cannot be batched, paused or done at your own pace, and assignments arrive as blocks separated by gaps nobody pays for. That shape, more than the language pair, is what the rate has to carry.
Keep the neighbouring trade separate. A translator works on written text, at their own desk and pace, and is usually priced per word. An interpreter works in speech, in real time, at the client's hour. Plenty of linguists do both — price them as the two different trades they are, and never let a per-word translation price set the value of a live day.
The preset below starts billable time at 45%: prep, travel and the gaps between assignments take the rest before any interpreting happens. The numbers are starting presets, not a survey: a $64,000 target income, $2,200 a year of expenses — certification and memberships, travel and remote-interpreting kit are the shape of it — and 45% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $112 an hour.

Costs interpreters forget to put in the rate
- The prep. Assignments land in subjects you did not choose — a tribunal, a cardiology clinic, a factory audit. Building the glossary and reading into the topic before you arrive is real work, and it is yours whether or not the booking terms name it.
- Travel and waiting. The assignment is two hours; the day it eats is longer. Travel to site, security checks, waiting for a delayed hearing — unpaid by default unless your terms say otherwise.
- Certification and memberships. The credentials that win conference and public-service work renew on a cycle, and the exams and fees sit in your costs, not the client's.
- The cancelled day. A booking cancelled at short notice is a day you turned other work away for and cannot resell. Cancellation terms exist because this cost is real.
- The remote kit. A proper headset, a wired backup connection and the platforms remote interpreting runs on — small costs that decide whether you sound professional on the call.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the interpreter presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 45% billable — that is 864 billable hours a year: the live assignment hours left once prep, travel and the gaps between bookings have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $66,200 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $88,267 — then add your profit margin to reach $97,093 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $112, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now convert it into the units clients book. A full day at the preset rate is $899, and the half day — four hours — is $448, which is why half-day minimums are this trade's standard shape: a forty-minute appointment still claims the travel, the prep and the slot. A short remote call can stay hourly, but keep a one-hour minimum, so a fifteen-minute call is priced at $112 and not at a quarter of it.
