Artificial Grass Installer Hourly Rate Calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed artificial grass installer should charge for their time, starting from the income you need, then builds the per-garden prices clients actually pay out of the hours each lawn honestly holds. Clients buy a lawn that never needs mowing — green in February, clean under the children’s feet, no mud carried through the house — and they picture the turf when they picture the cost. Inside that picture hides the truth of the trade: the turf is the last and easiest layer of the job. Under it sits the excavation of the old lawn, the sub-base that decides whether the new one drains or puddles and stays flat or ripples, the edging that holds its line, and the joins and infill that disappear when they are done well. A cheap install is almost always a skipped base announcing itself a year later. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $87 an hour, $694 for a full day — and the work built from it: an average back garden of about 40 square metres, dug out, based and laid across two days, at $1,389 of labour; a smaller lawn of about 20 square metres at about ten hours, $868; a repair and re-edge visit at about two hours, $174 — with turf, aggregate and membrane billed as their own lines, never inside the hour.
The pricing reality for artificial grass installers
Artificial grass is bought per garden and priced per square metre, but it is earned from the ground down. The sequence never changes — dig out, build and compact the base, lay the membrane, then the turf, joined, brushed and infilled — and the visible stage is the shortest of them. Two gardens of the same size work a day apart on what the digging finds: tree roots, an old concrete path, drainage that was never there. The metre rate the client compares is really a groundworks rate wearing a green finish, and the installer who prices the finish and donates the ground loses money beautifully.
It replaces the living lawn rather than tending it, which is where it parts from the gardener, whose trade is planting, feeding and the maintenance round. Nothing in an artificial lawn grows, and nothing about it is maintained weekly — it is a surface, installed once. Its nearest cousin is the paving installer: the groundworks DNA is shared — excavation, sub-base, levels — but the material system on top is its own, all membrane, grain direction, joins and infill, and a firm can be excellent at one surface and ordinary at the other.
The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $52,000 target income, $10,500 a year of expenses — vehicle and fuel leads, with digger and compactor hire and wear, tools, cutters and joining kit, waste disposal and aggregate handling, liability insurance, turf sample kits, phone, quoting and admin, and marketing — a 25% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 55% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $87 an hour. The billable share is the shape of outdoor project work: survey and sample visits, travel, and days the weather closes the ground all take time the laying price has to carry.

Costs artificial grass installers forget to put in the rate
- The old lawn has to go somewhere. Every install begins by removing a garden: turf, soil and whatever the last owner buried. Skip hire and disposal fees land on every job, and a rate that forgets them donates the first hours of each lawn to the tip.
- Machinery hire and wear. The digger opens the ground and the compactor decides whether the base stays honest; both are hired, worn and repaired on a schedule the gardens choose. Priced in advance they are a cost of the year — priced afterwards, a crisis.
- The ground that surprises. Roots like cables, a soakaway that is not there, made-up ground that keeps sinking: the dig finds what the survey could not see. Time for the finding, and the extra base it orders, belongs in the year’s maths.
- Weather on open ground. An excavated garden in two days of rain is a pond with ambitions. Rained-off days and the re-compaction after them are unbilled time every outdoor rate has to carry quietly.
- Samples and the sales visit. Turf is chosen by hand and eye at the client’s table, and the sample kits that make the choosing possible are replaced as ranges change. The visit that wins the job is skilled time, priced like the rest.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the artificial grass installer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 55% billable — that is 1,056 billable hours a year: the digging, basing and laying clients can pay for, once surveying, quoting and weather have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $62,500 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $83,333 — then add your profit margin to reach $91,667 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $87, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now translate the hour into the prices clients actually buy. The garden is the quoted unit, built from hours and area together: a lawn of about 20 square metres — dig out, base and lay — at about ten hours, $868 of labour; a back garden of about 40 square metres across two days at $1,389; a repair, patch and re-edge visit at about two hours, $174; a full day at $694. Turf, aggregate, membrane and edging arrive on the invoice as themselves. Quoted that way, the client can see what they are buying: a base built to outlast the lawn on top of it — and the metre price that skipped the groundworks stops looking cheaper.
