Dog walker hourly rate calculator

This free calculator works out the hourly rate a freelance dog walker should charge, starting from the income you need — then converts it into the units clients actually buy. Nobody asks a dog walker for an hourly rate; they ask what a walk costs, per dog. But your costs run by the hour: your time, your vehicle between homes, your insurance. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $50 an hour, $402 for a full day — and the conversion the trade lives on: one hour of group walking with four dogs covers that hour at $12.50 a dog.

The pricing reality for freelance dog walkers

Dog walking is priced per walk and per dog, but it is worked per hour and per mile. A solo walk sells one dog’s fee against a whole hour of you — the walk itself, plus the drive to the house, the key, the towel-down and the drive on. A group walk is how the arithmetic changes: four compatible dogs on one route earn the hour four times over. Route density — dogs in the same streets, walked together — is the margin engine of the whole trade, the same logic a pest controller’s round runs on.

The day also has a shape money has to respect. Demand clusters at midday, with smaller peaks early and late; dogs need walking in weather that cancels other trades’ work; and every new client starts with a free meet-and-greet that appears in nobody’s price list. The presets below use a 32-hour week at 70% billable: the walking bills, the driving between homes, the scheduling and the meet-and-greets do not.

The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $36,000 target income, $4,100 a year of expenses — vehicle and fuel for the round lead, with bonding and pet-care insurance, a booking and payment app, leads, harnesses and supplies, and marketing — a 20% tax estimate and 70% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $50 an hour.

Costs dog walkers forget to put in the rate

  • Travel between homes. The unpaid miles are this trade’s biggest leak. Ten minutes of driving either side of every walk is a third of a solo walker’s day — it is counted in the billable percentage here, and it is why grouping dogs by neighbourhood matters more than any price rise.
  • Bonding and pet-care insurance. You hold people’s keys and their animals. One lost dog, one injured pet, one incident in someone’s home is a business-ending bill without cover — the premium is a cost of every walk, not an optional extra.
  • Leads, harnesses and consumables. Slip leads, spare harnesses, treats, waste bags, towels for wet dogs, the shoes you wear out walking. Small lines, renewed constantly, and they come out of the same hour everything else does.
  • The booking and payment app. The software that runs the schedule, the invoices and the client messages takes its monthly cut whether January is full or empty.
  • The free meet-and-greet. Every client relationship starts with an unpaid visit — the keys, the dog’s quirks, the alarm code. It is good practice and real time; a busy walker gives away hours of it a month.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the dog walker presets — three weeks off, 32 hours a week, 70% billable — that is 1,098 billable hours a year: the hours with dogs on leads, once the driving, scheduling and meet-and-greets have taken theirs.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $40,100 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 20% estimate, divide by 0.80 to get $50,125 — then add your profit margin to reach $55,138 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $50, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now convert the hour into walks, because walks are what clients buy. A one-hour solo walk is $50 of your time; a thirty-minute walk is $25 before travel — and travel counts: a thirty-minute walk with fifteen minutes of driving either side is forty-five minutes of you, $37.50 at this rate. The group walk is the honest way the numbers soften for clients: four dogs walked together for an hour cover the hour at $12.50 a dog. Price per walk if you like — but check every per-walk price against the hour it really takes.

Disclaimer: This is a planning estimate, not tax advice. Tax rates, deductions and allowances vary by country, state and business structure. Enter the rate you expect to pay, and check significant decisions with a qualified accountant.
Questions

Dog walker rate questions

Quote per walk — it is the unit clients understand — and build every per-walk price from your hourly rate plus the travel around it. A walk is never just its minutes on the lead: the drive, the key, the towel-down and the message to the owner are part of the job the price has to cover. If a per-walk price only works by pretending the travel is free, the price is wrong, not the travel.
Because in this trade the walking bills and the movement between walks does not. Seventy percent is a realistic start for a walker with a reasonably tight round. A solo-only walker covering a wide area will honestly run lower; a walker who groups four dogs a route in a few streets will run higher. Set the number that matches your round — the rate is only as honest as the hours underneath it.
Less per dog, yes — the same per hour, no. The hour is the unit your costs understand, and it has to gross its $50 on these presets whether one dog or four are on it: four dogs at $12.50, two at $25. That is the fair structure in both directions — clients share the saving your route density creates, and no single client is quietly subsidising your driving time.
