Shutter Installer Hourly Rate Calculator

This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed shutter installer should charge for their time, starting from the income you need, then builds the per-opening prices clients actually pay out of the hours each fitting honestly holds. Clients buy shade, privacy and a house that can be closed against the weather at one fitted price — and they picture the shutter itself: the slats, the colour, the quiet close. Inside that price hides the work the shutter stands on: openings measured that turn out never to be square, fixings set into masonry, brick or a lintel that argues back, guides aligned so the curtain runs true, and every edge sealed against the rain the shutter exists to keep out. The honest complication is that the product is made to measure: your numbers order a shutter that fits one opening in the world, and it cannot be sent back. The measure is not the prelude to this job — it is the job everything else stands on. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $91 an hour, $726 for a full day — and the work built from it: a measuring visit at about an hour, $91; a single opening fitted and sealed at about two hours, $181; a house front of four openings at about seven hours, $635 — with the shutters themselves billed as the client’s made-to-measure purchase, never inside your hour.

The pricing reality for shutter installers

Shutter work is bought per opening and earned on the wall, not in the showroom. Every opening is measured three ways because old houses settle out of square, and the shutter ordered to those numbers arrives weeks later with no tolerance for a guess. The fitting itself is envelope work: fixings that must hold in whatever the wall is made of, guides that must run plumb on a face that is not, and sealing that decides whether the installation sheds water or invites it. Two openings side by side work an hour apart on the masonry alone — before the shutter has said a word.

It is the outside of the window trade, where the blind installer and the curtain installer work the inside. Blinds are mechanisms fitted within the reveal; curtains are fabric dressed at the glass. Shutters are fixed to the building’s face — weather side — with structural fixings, ladders and sealant, and security and motorised versions add their own weight and wiring. Awnings are the trade’s close neighbour and are often fitted by the same hands on the same visit, quoted per opening the same honest way. Same window, three trades, different sides of the glass.

The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $56,000 target income, $9,300 a year of expenses — vehicle and fuel leads, with ladders and access equipment, the power tools and drill kit, fixings, sealants and consumables, liability insurance, samples and colour swatches, phone, quoting and admin, and marketing — a 25% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 55% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $91 an hour. The billable share is the shape of exterior work: measuring rounds, travel between houses and whole days handed to the weather all take time no fitting invoice names, and every opening pays for a slice of them.

Costs shutter installers forget to put in the rate

  • The measure that cannot be redone. Made-to-measure means your numbers become a product that fits one opening and no other. A shutter ordered wrong is not returnable stock — it is your margin hanging in someone’s garage. The care, the second check and the insurance behind them are priced, not hoped for.
  • Height and access. Upper-floor openings mean ladders, access equipment and sometimes a second pair of hands on the fixings. Access is time before it is anything else, and working at height on a façade is slower because it must be.
  • Walls that argue back. Crumbling render, hollow block, a steel lintel exactly where the fixing wants to be: the wall renegotiates every fitting, and the fixings stock and patience for it sit in these expenses.
  • Days given to the weather. Exterior fitting is the weather’s hostage — sealant wants a dry day and ladders want a calm one. A rained-off day is unbilled, and a year of them is carried by the days that bill.
  • Motors and remotes. Motorised shutters return with questions — limits to reset, a remote that lost its pairing, a client sure it worked yesterday. The settling visit belongs to the fitting; the third visit is a service call, and naming the line early keeps it friendly.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the shutter installer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 55% billable — that is 1,056 billable hours a year: the measuring, fitting and sealing clients can pay for, once travel, quoting and weather days have taken theirs.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $65,300 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $87,067 — then add your profit margin to reach $95,773 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $91, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now translate the hour into the prices clients actually buy. The opening is the quoted unit, built from hours: a measuring visit at about an hour, $91 of labour; one opening fitted, aligned and sealed at about two hours, $181; a house front of four openings at about seven hours, $635; a full day at $726. The shutters themselves arrive on the invoice as themselves — made to measure at the maker’s price — and motors, remotes and extra guides sit as their own lines too. Quoted that way, the client can see what they are buying: millimetres that were measured twice, fixings that will hold, and a shutter that closes against the weather it was bought for.

Questions

Shutter Installer rate questions

They are the outside and inside of the same window. Blinds are mechanisms fitted in the reveal, curtains are fabric dressed at the glass; shutters are fixed to the building’s face, weather side, with structural fixings and sealing. The measure overlaps, the kit and the consequences do not — a blind measured wrong comes back to the workshop, a shutter measured wrong fits nothing on earth.
No. Shutters are made to measure for the client’s openings and billed as their own lines at the maker’s price or with a stated mark-up; the rate prices measuring, fitting and sealing. One house front of security shutters buried in the hour would bend the price of every single-opening job around it.
It is the visit the whole order stands on, so it should be paid either way: many installers charge for the measure and credit it against the fitting, which rewards the client who goes ahead and prices the one who was only collecting numbers. Free measuring donates your most consequential hour to the comparison shoppers.
