The pricing reality for freelance Shopify developers

Shopify work arrives in two shapes. There is the build: a store set up, a theme customised, a migration from another platform, a checkout extended. And there is everything after the build — the app that stopped syncing, the discount that will not stack, the staff member who needs the admin explained again — small, urgent pieces of work that land between the projects you planned.

That is why the preset below starts billable time at 55%. Quoting, reproducing a bug on a test store, waiting on a client’s product photos and sitting on support threads are real hours that never reach an invoice. Developers who build from scratch rather than on a platform run the same maths on the web developer presets, where the project shape is different but the invisible work is just as real.

The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $78,000 target income, $3,600 a year of expenses — test stores, the app and theme stack and your own software are the shape of it — and 55% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $113 an hour. Change any figure to match your own books; the point is that the aftercare gets counted before the rate is quoted, not absorbed quietly afterwards.

Easy to miss

Costs Shopify developers forget to put in the rate

  • Test stores and a real checkout. You need development stores — and often one paid store of your own — to reproduce client problems and test apps before they touch a live shop.
  • The app and theme stack. The premium themes and apps you recommend, you have to know, and knowing them means licences that renew every year whether client work comes or not.
  • Keeping current. The platform changes on a schedule — API versions, checkout rules, theme architecture — and learning what changed is unpaid research the business depends on.
  • Client hand-holding. The training video, the handover notes, the call about why an app subscription lapsed — support time scales with every store you have ever launched.
  • The twenty-minute fix. Small fixes still cost the interruption: context gone, the bug found, the change tested. Unbilled fragments are where a Shopify week quietly leaks.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the Shopify developer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 55% billable — that is 1,056 billable hours a year, well under the 2,080 hours a salaried job is counted on. That gap is why dividing a target salary by 2,080 always underprices freelance Shopify work.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $81,600 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $108,800 — then add your profit margin to reach $119,680 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $113, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now convert it back into the units clients buy. A day at the preset rate is $907. A theme build counted honestly at 25 hours of work is $2,825 — the reliable way to fix a build price is to count its hours first. And a care plan that reserves ten hours a month is a $1,130 monthly retainer before any discount conversation starts, which is where the retainer maths should begin.
