Home Organizer hourly rate calculator

This free calculator works out the hourly rate a freelance home organizer should charge, starting from the income you need — then converts it into the session blocks and room prices clients actually book. Organising is sold by the room, the project or the session block, because clients buy outcomes: a working kitchen, a calm office, a garage you can park in. They are not buying hours — but hours are still how you find out whether the price pays. With the honest presets below it lands near $71 an hour, $565 for a full day: a three-hour session block prices near $213, and a kitchen project at about six hours near $426.

The pricing reality for freelance home organizers

No client has ever asked for six hours of organising; they ask for a kitchen that works. So the price is quoted as the room or the block, and the clock stays in the background — where it still decides everything. A room priced on your fastest, easiest day will overrun on the slow, sentimental one, and the difference comes out of your week.

Donation drop-offs and disposal runs are usually the client's errand — or a charged trip, when you take them on. What they should never be is silently yours: across a big project, the runs to donate, recycle and dispose can add hours nobody priced. Say which arrangement applies in the package, before the first session.

The preset below starts billable time at 50%: sessions bill, but the consult and the plan, sourcing storage products, travel and the follow-up messages do not. The expenses preset — $2,200 — is an organising kit and supplies, transport, insurance and booking software. The numbers are starting presets, not a survey: a $44,000 target income and 50% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $71 an hour.

Costs home organizers forget to put in the rate

  • The consult and the plan. Walking the space, agreeing what stays and what goes, and planning the sessions is skilled time. Put it in the package price, or charge it as the first session.
  • Sourcing storage. Finding the right boxes, baskets and shelving takes hours and a car. Either the client buys from your list, or the sourcing time is billed — decide before the session, not after.
  • The client's pace. People sort at their speed, not yours: keepsakes are slow. Price by the session block, so a careful, emotional day pays the same as a brisk one.
  • Donation and tip runs. Trips to donate, recycle or dispose add up across a project. The client's errand, or a charged trip at your rate — never quietly absorbed as a favour.
  • Photos and follow-up. Before-and-after photos (with permission) and the check-in message sell the next project. They take minutes each, and they belong in the unbillable half of the week the rate allows for.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the home organizer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 50% billable — that is 960 billable hours a year: the session hours left once consults, planning, sourcing trips, travel and follow-up messages have taken theirs.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $46,200 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $61,600 — then add your profit margin to reach $67,760 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $71, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now convert it into the units clients buy. A three-hour session block is $213. A single room worked start to finish at about five hours is $355. A kitchen project at about six hours is $426. Quote the block and the room as fixed prices — but build them from these hours, so a slow, careful sorting day pays like a brisk one.

Disclaimer: This is a planning estimate, not tax advice. Tax rates, deductions and allowances vary by country, state and business structure. Enter the rate you expect to pay, and check significant decisions with a qualified accountant.
Questions

Home Organizer rate questions

Per session block or per room — that is how clients buy it. Hours are how you price it: on these presets an hour is $71, so a three-hour session block is $213 and a six-hour kitchen project is $426. Quote the block; build it from the hours.
Because sessions are only part of the week. The consult, the plan, sourcing storage, travel between homes and follow-up messages all take hours nobody is billed for. Half the week in clients' rooms is a realistic start.
Decide, and say it in the package: usually they are the client's errand, or a charged trip at your rate when you take them. What quietly loses money is absorbing every run as a favour — across a large project they can add hours to the job.
