Welder hourly rate calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed welder should charge for their time, starting from the income you need, then builds the call-out and day rates clients actually pay out of the hours a job really holds. Clients rarely buy “an hour of welding”; they buy the gate that closes, the trailer that rolls again, the machine back in service — your arrival with the rig, the setup, the welds, and the grinding that finishes them. The steel and parts are materials, billed as their own line; the rate prices your skill and your hours. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $95 an hour, $761 for a full day — and the call-out built from it: a two-hour minimum for a mobile repair, $190 — with a half day on site at four hours, $380.
The pricing reality for welders
A job is bought flat and earned across more hours than the sparks suggest. Inside the fee sit the measuring and quoting, the setup, the cutting and preparation, the welding itself, the grinding and finishing, and the pack-up. A rate copied from the workshop across town carries all of that whether it covers it or not. Price the hour first, and the job becomes an assembly: so many hours of your skill, at a rate that adds up.
Materials are a separate honesty. Steel, plate and parts are bought for the job and billed as their own line — at cost or with a stated mark-up, agreed up front. A welder who buries materials inside an hourly rate looks expensive on small jobs and bleeds money on big ones. Your rate prices time, skill and the rig; the metal is the client's, on the client's line of the invoice.
The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $58,000 target income, $16,700 a year of expenses — vehicle and fuel leads, with consumables like wire, rods and gas, equipment upkeep, a workshop or storage share, liability insurance, website, marketing and admin, protective gear, and certifications — a 25% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 60% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $95 an hour.

Costs welders forget to put in the rate
- The consumables. Wire, electrodes, gas, grinding discs, cutting tips — a welding day eats materials that never appear on the invoice as steel. They are a cost of every billable hour and belong in the expenses line, estimated honestly from last year's receipts, not discovered in December.
- The rig's upkeep. The welder, the generator, the leads and the truck are the business. Their servicing, repairs and eventual replacement are paid for by the rate or not at all — there is no third option. A rate that ignores depreciation is borrowing from next year's breakdown.
- The quoting trips. Measuring a gate across town, photographing a cracked frame, pricing a job you do not win — that is skilled time spent in traffic. Some welders charge a call-out that covers it; everyone else must let the billable percentage carry it.
- The prep and the finish. Clients picture the arc; the job is mostly cutting, cleaning, clamping, grinding and painting. If your quotes price only the welding minutes, the unglamorous majority of every job is working for free.
- The certification. Where the work demands tested, certified welds — structural, pressure, site work — the tickets cost money to gain and to keep, and licensing or certification requirements vary by place and by job. They are also why your hour is worth more than a hobbyist's, and the rate should say so without apology.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the welder presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 60% billable — that is 1,152 billable hours a year: the quoting, cutting, welding and finishing clients can pay for, once travel, maintenance and paperwork have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $74,700 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $99,600 — then add your profit margin to reach $109,560 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $95, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now translate the hour into the prices clients actually buy. A mobile repair call-out carries a two-hour minimum — the drive, the setup and the pack-up mean a twenty-minute weld is never a twenty-minute job — which is $190 before materials. A half day on site is four hours, $380; a full day is the day rate, $761. The steel, parts and any hire equipment sit on their own invoice line, agreed before the work starts. Emergency out-of-hours repairs can carry a premium built from the same rate — time and a half is a defensible shape — stated when the call comes in, not when the bill goes out.
