Glazier hourly rate calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed glazier should charge for their time, starting from the income you need, then builds the call-out minimums and unit prices clients actually pay out of the hours a job really holds. Clients rarely buy “an hour of glazing”; they buy the smashed pane made safe tonight, the misted unit clear again, the shopfront boarded and re-glazed — your measuring, cutting, handling and fitting, with a material that forgives nothing. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $90 an hour, $719 for a full day — and the call-out built from it: a minimum of an hour and a half for a job away from the workshop, $135 — with a standard sealed-unit replacement at about an hour of labour, $90, and a half day at four hours, $359. The glass and sealed units themselves are materials, billed as their own line; the rate prices your skill and your hours.
The pricing reality for glaziers
A job is bought flat and earned across more hours than the fitting suggests. Inside the price sit the measuring — twice, because a unit ordered wrong is a unit you own — the ordering and collecting, the careful transport, the removal of the old unit, the fitting and the sealing. A rate copied from the glazier across town carries all of that whether it covers it or not. Price the hour first, and the job becomes an assembly: so many hours of your skill, at a rate that adds up.
Glazing also has a shape the diary cannot smooth out: emergencies. The broken window at nine in the evening is a make-safe now and a measure for the replacement, two visits inside one job, the first of them unsocial by definition. The call-out minimum and the out-of-hours premium are not gouging — they are how a spiky, travel-heavy trade keeps its ordinary hours honestly priced instead of quietly subsidising every emergency.
The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $52,000 target income, $12,700 a year of expenses — vehicle and fuel leads, with a workshop or storage share, liability insurance, tools like cutters, suckers and drills, van racking and glass-handling gear, marketing and admin, workwear, and glass waste disposal — a 25% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 55% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $90 an hour.

Costs glaziers forget to put in the rate
- The wrong-measure risk. Sealed units and cut glass are made to the measurements you give — a mistake is a unit you own. Measuring carefully, and twice, is skilled time spent before any glass is touched, and it belongs in the hours your prices are built from, not in your goodwill.
- The breakage. Glass breaks: in transit, on the stairs, in the last inch of the fit. Handling gear, careful packing and your insurance excess carry most of it, but the odd pane is a cost of the trade. A rate with no room for breakage is pretending glass is made of something else.
- The making-safe hours. Boarding up a smashed window or shopfront is urgent, unsocial and rarely the whole job — the replacement visit follows days later. Both visits are real hours; pricing only the fitting donates the emergency half of the work.
- The van and the racking. Glass travels upright, secured, on a racked van — the vehicle and its racking, glazing bars and suction gear are the business's delivery system. Their cost and upkeep are paid for by the rate or not at all.
- The disposal. Old units, broken panes and offcuts cannot go in a household bin — trade glass disposal costs fees on most jobs. If disposal is not in the expenses and not on the invoice, it is coming out of the rate.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the glazier presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 55% billable — that is 1,056 billable hours a year: the measuring, cutting, fitting and making safe clients can pay for, once quoting, travel and waiting on unit deliveries have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $64,700 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $86,267 — then add your profit margin to reach $94,893 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $90, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now translate the hour into the prices clients actually buy. A job away from the workshop carries a call-out minimum of an hour and a half — the travel, the unload and the pack-up mean a twenty-minute reglaze is never a twenty-minute job — which is $135 before materials. A standard sealed-unit replacement is about an hour of labour, $90, with the unit itself on its own line; a half day is four hours, $359, and a full day is the day rate, $719. Emergency out-of-hours work can carry a premium built from the same rate — time and a half is a defensible shape — stated when the call comes in, not when the bill goes out.
