Window Tint Installer Hourly Rate Calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed window tint installer should charge for their time, starting from the income you need, then builds the per-vehicle and per-pane prices clients actually pay out of the hours each sheet of glass honestly holds. Clients buy the result — a car that stays cooler, a front room the street cannot see into, glass that holds its heat through winter — and they picture the film when they picture the cost. Inside that price hides a craft of millimetres: glass cleaned to surgical standards because film forgives nothing, panels cut to the curve of the pane, water squeegeed out edge by edge, and the discipline to strip a finished window and start again over one trapped speck of dust. The film itself is a material with a grade and a warranty, and it belongs on the invoice as itself. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $80 an hour, $640 for a full day — and the work built from it: one vehicle’s side and rear glass at about two and a half hours, $200 of labour; a room of house windows at about three hours, $240; a single pane at about forty-five minutes, $60 — with the film billed as its own line, grade by grade.
The pricing reality for window tint installers
Tinting is bought per vehicle and per pane, and earned in preparation nobody watches. The application that clients imagine — film on, water out, done — is the final third of the job: before it comes the cleaning that decides whether the finish is flawless or speckled, the pattern cut or plotted to the pane, and the panel hung true the first time, because film stretched twice remembers it. Two cars of the same model work an hour apart: one clean and new, the other carrying a decade of dust in its seals and an old film whose removal doubles the day.
It is the film layer on sound glass, which is where it parts from the neighbours. The glazier replaces the glass itself — cracked, failed or misted units are theirs. The blind installer and the shutter installer hang coverings beside the glass that can be opened and closed; tint is bonded to the glass and works while nobody thinks about it — no cords, no slats, nothing to dust. The craft’s closest cousin is the sign writer’s vinyl: the same squeegee discipline, pointed at privacy and heat instead of letters.
The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $48,000 target income, $9,600 a year of expenses — vehicle and fuel leads, with film and materials stock, the plotter, tools and application kit, liability insurance, the mobile workshop kit and canopies, phone and booking, quoting and admin, marketing, and training and certification — a 25% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 55% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $80 an hour. The billable share is the shape of per-pane work: short jobs in many places, travel between them, and the occasional panel stripped and redone at your hours rather than the client’s.

Costs window tint installers forget to put in the rate
- The speck that starts the panel again. Film shows everything trapped beneath it, forever, at eye level. Dust control, endless cleaning and the occasional full redo are not perfectionism — they are the product, and the redo hours belong in the rate.
- Old film coming off. Failed, purpled film from a cheaper decade has to be steamed and scraped from glass and demister lines before new film can land. Removal is slow, filthy and charged by nobody who forgot to look first.
- Film wasted at the edges. Every pane is cut from a roll wider than itself; curves, mistakes and plotter trims burn material on every job. Stock and waste are running costs here, not surprises.
- The legal shade. Visible-light limits for vehicle glass are rules, not preferences, and they differ by window and by place. Knowing them, stocking compliant grades and declining the shade that would fail inspection is part of what the client is paying for.
- Sun, wind and other people’s driveways. Mobile fitting fights the weather: a gust at the wrong second folds a panel, and summer sun skins the slip solution before the squeegee arrives. Canopies, scheduling around the heat and the patience tax are real costs.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the window tint installer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 55% billable — that is 1,056 billable hours a year: the measuring, cutting and applying clients can pay for, once travel, quoting and redos have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $57,600 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $76,800 — then add your profit margin to reach $84,480 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $80, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now translate the hour into the prices clients actually buy. The vehicle is the first unit: side and rear glass — cleaned, cut, applied and edged — at about two and a half hours, $200 of labour, with the chosen film as its own line. The house is priced by the pane and the room: a room of windows at about three hours, $240; a single pane at about forty-five minutes, $60; a full day across a house or a run of cars at $640. Quoted that way, with the film’s grade and its warranty named, the client can see what they are buying: not a roll of plastic, but a flawless finish that stays flawless.
