Handyman hourly rate calculator

This free calculator works out the hourly rate a freelance handyman should charge, starting from the income you need — then converts it into the minimum callouts and half-day blocks clients actually book. Small jobs only pay when the minimums are honest: a ten-minute fix still costs a drive, a diagnosis and an hour of your diary. With the honest presets below it lands near $79 an hour, $633 for a full day: a one-hour minimum callout prices near $79, and a half-day block at four hours near $316.

The pricing reality for freelance handymen

A handyman day can hold five clients and four drives between them. Every job on the list is small; the day is not. What decides whether the day pays is rarely the fix itself — it is whether travel, assessment and the small-job overheads were priced in before the day filled up with them.

Some of the work neighbours the house painter presets: the decorating jobs on a handyman's list price the same way, by the job, built from the hour. The rest of the list — repairs, fittings, flat-pack, seals and snags — is priced the same way underneath, however it is presented.

The preset below starts billable time at 50%: jobs bill, but quotes, parts runs to the merchant, travel between clients and chasing many small invoices do not. The expenses preset — $3,800 — is tools and their replacement, a vehicle and fuel, insurance and booking software; small consumables like screws, anchors and sealant are usually charged on the job or passed through, and the quote should say so. The numbers are starting presets, not a survey: a $48,000 target income and 50% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $79 an hour.

Every handyman list has an edge, and the edge is a pricing decision. Some of the jobs clients ask for belong to licensed trades — fixed wiring, gas work and parts of plumbing, in many places — and the line moves depending on where you work. The honest price stops at that line: take the jobs either side of it, and name the ones you are handing back, so the client hears a boundary rather than a reluctance. It protects the rate as well as the client. An hour spent inside a job that was never yours to do is an hour billed at handyman money for licensed-trade risk, and no minimum callout is priced to carry that. Work kept inside the trade prices cleanly: every job on the list traces back to the same hour.

Costs handymen forget to put in the rate

  • Parts runs. A ten-minute job can need a forty-minute trip for one fitting. Two trips to the same house belong in the job price — or in a minimum that quietly covers them.
  • The minimum that isn't. Turning up is worth an hour whether the fix takes ten minutes or fifty. Without a stated minimum callout, the smallest jobs pay the least for the same diary hour.
  • Tool wear and breakages. Drills, drivers and bits wear out, and a cracked tile on a repair job happens to everyone. The expenses line and the margin are what absorb them.
  • Many small invoices. Five clients a day is five invoices and five chances of a slow payment. Short terms, and deposits on materials for bigger jobs, keep the chasing small.
  • Quoting time. Looking at a job, listing parts and writing the price is skilled time. Charge a quote visit, or fold it into the price of the work — but never pretend it is free.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the handyman presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 50% billable — that is 960 billable hours a year: the on-the-tools hours left once travel, parts runs, quotes and the admin of many small clients have taken theirs.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $51,800 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $69,067 — then add your profit margin to reach $75,973 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $79, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now convert it into the units clients buy. The minimum callout — the first hour, door to door — is $79. A half-day block of listed small jobs at one address, at four hours, is $316. A full day on site is $633 on the calculator above. Quote the minimum and the block as fixed prices — but build them from these hours, so a day of small jobs pays like the skilled day it is.

Run a landlord’s list through it. A letting agent turning around two tenancies books two half-day blocks, $316 each — $632 for the day — and the list at each address shares one drive and one setup: doors eased, seals renewed, a curtain rail re-fixed, locks changed and a dripping tap sorted. Against the $633 day rate the two blocks land within a dollar of it, and that is the point of the block. The agent buys the day in two honest halves, and work that would otherwise have needed five separate $79 callouts is priced by the time it actually takes.

Questions

Handyman rate questions

An hour at your rate, stated up front: on these presets that is $79, and it covers the drive, the diagnosis and the small fix together. A half-day block at four hours — $316 — suits the list-of-small-jobs visit, where several tasks at one address share one trip.
Because the tools are only half the week. Travel between clients, parts runs, quotes, bookings and the admin of many small invoices take the rest, and nobody is billed for any of them. Half the week on the tools is a realistic start for small-job work.
For a look-and-list visit, either charge a callout that comes off the bill if the job proceeds, or stick to work you can price from photos and a description. What does not work is free site visits all week: they come straight out of the billable half of the diary.
Two kinds. The first is work that belongs to a licensed trade — fixed wiring, gas and parts of plumbing in many places — which should be named and handed back, not absorbed: done at handyman rates, it carries licensed-trade risk for handyman money. The second is the fault you cannot see yet. Where the diagnosis is the real job, charge the callout to investigate, $79 on these presets, and price the repair once it can be seen. A cheap yes to either kind costs more than the no.
