Audiobook Narrator hourly rate calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate an audiobook narrator should charge, starting from the income you need — then converts it into the per-finished-hour price this trade is actually bought in. Behind every finished hour of audio sit several studio hours of narration, retakes, proofing and mastering. With the honest presets below it lands near $106 an hour: at roughly five production hours per finished hour, one finished hour prices at $530.
The pricing reality for freelance audiobook narrators
Audiobook narration is long-form endurance work sold by a unit the client can count: the finished hour. The author or publisher hears nine hours of audio; you lived the forty-five studio hours behind it. Pricing that starts from the finished hour alone — without asking what a finished hour costs you to make — is how narrators end up busy and underpaid.
Keep the neighbouring trade separate. A voice actor sells short-form work — spots, explainers, session fees measured in minutes of copy. A narrator sells a book: weeks of sustained performance, character consistency and production discipline. If you do both, price both; the session logic of a sixty-second ad says nothing about a ten-hour novel.
The preset below starts billable time at 40% — the lowest share in this batch, honestly: auditions, admin and the hunt for the next book sit outside the studio hours, and the studio hours themselves stretch across far more days than the finished audio suggests. The numbers are starting presets, not a survey: a $52,000 target income, $3,400 a year of expenses — studio treatment, microphone and interface, software and proofing are the shape of it — and 40% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $106 an hour.

Costs audiobook narrators forget to put in the rate
- The auditions. Short unpaid samples are this trade's job interview, repeated for every book you win — and every one you don't. They are hours, and the rate carries them.
- The studio itself. Treatment, a quiet space, a microphone and interface that hold up across a ten-hour book — the room is your instrument, and it is inside the expenses figure, not an afterthought.
- Proofing. Every finished hour has to be listened back to — by you or a proofer you pay — against the text, before a single file ships. Skipped proofing becomes retakes later, at worse moments.
- Pickups and fixes. The mispronounced name, the sentence the author rewrites after delivery. A round of corrections is normal; price the book so a normal round is already paid for.
- Mastering to spec. Retailers reject files that miss their technical specs. The final pass — levels, spacing, file prep — is skilled time, and it is per finished hour, every hour.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the audiobook narrator presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 40% billable — that is 768 billable hours a year: the studio hours left once auditions, admin and finding the next book have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $55,400 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $73,867 — then add your profit margin to reach $81,253 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $106, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now convert it into the unit clients buy. A full studio day at the preset rate is $846, but books are priced per finished hour: multiply your rate by the total production hours one finished hour takes. This page assumes about five — roughly two recording and three across proofing, editing and mastering — which makes a finished hour $530, and a ten-finished-hour book $5,300. The assumption is yours to adjust: at four hours a finished hour is $424, at six it is $636. Measure your own ratio on your next book and price from the measured one.
