Insulation Installer Hourly Rate Calculator
This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed insulation installer should charge for their time, starting from the income you need, then builds the per-square-metre and per-room labour prices clients actually pay out of the hours the work really holds. Clients rarely buy “an hour of insulating”; they buy a warmer house and a smaller heating bill, usually priced by the metre or the room. The metres themselves are rarely the job: the job is reaching them — through a small loft hatch, along boarded joists, into eaves and crawl spaces where the work happens at arm’s length. The insulation itself is a material, billed as its own line; the rate prices your access, your sealing and your hours. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $79 an hour, $636 for a full day — and the work built from it: a 45 m² loft top-up at about five hours, $397 — roughly $9 of labour in every square metre — a room’s wall insulation at about six hours, $477 — a survey and assessment visit at about two hours, $159 — with rolls, fibre and boards never inside any of those figures.
The pricing reality for insulation installers
Insulation is bought by the project and quoted by the metre or the room, and earned in spaces the measurements do not describe. A 45 m² loft with a wide hatch and boarded walkway and the same 45 m² reached through a small hatch, over unboarded joists, around a decade of stored boxes, are different days wearing the same number. That is why the honest quote is built from hours first: the metre is a fair unit only once the access has been priced, and the access is priced in time — stated plainly as part of the job, never as a complaint about the client’s house.
Access is this trade’s hidden clock in smaller ways too. Eaves need baffles fitted before they can be insulated at all; crawl spaces turn a fitting hour into three; a room’s walls are quick once they are open and slow when every board is a negotiation with what is behind it. None of that is visible in a per-metre price copied from a competitor’s leaflet, and all of it is visible in your diary at the end of the week. Price the hour first, and metres and rooms become assemblies of the same honest number.
The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $44,000 target income, $8,000 a year of expenses — vehicle and fuel leads, with blowing machine and tools, liability insurance, respirators, PPE and filters, ladders and access gear, tape, foam and baffle consumables, waste disposal and bags, phone, quoting and admin, and training and certification — a 25% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 50% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $79 an hour. The billable share is the humble part: half the trade happens in surveys, access battles, material runs and quoting, before a single metre is insulated.

Costs insulation installers forget to put in the rate
- Access time. Hatches, boarding over joists and working around what a loft already holds are hours, not atmosphere. And when a client’s stored boxes have to be shifted before work can start, that shifting is time — named in the quote or donated to it.
- The survey, and the honest no. Measuring up, checking ventilation, damp and wiring before quoting is the visit that stops bad jobs becoming your jobs. Some lofts should not be insulated until something else is fixed; the survey that says so is billable judgement, priced as its own visit.
- Respirators and filters. PPE in this trade is a consumable with a replacement schedule, not a one-off purchase. Masks and filters sit in the expenses presets because loft work in January is done with protection the rate has already replaced twice.
- Sealing and baffles. The fiddly hour around the metres — air sealing, eaves baffles, hatches draught-proofed — is what makes the insulation actually perform. Skipped in the quote, it is either skipped on the job or paid for out of the rate.
- Waste and the bag-out. Old insulation comes out in bags and goes to disposal at a cost per load. The bag-out is part of the job’s hours and its expenses; left out of the quote, it comes out of the margin instead.
How this calculator works
Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the insulation installer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 50% billable — that is 960 billable hours a year: the blowing, fitting and sealing clients can pay for, once surveys, access battles, material runs and quoting have taken theirs.
Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $52,000 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $69,333 — then add your profit margin to reach $76,267 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $79, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.
Now translate the hour into the prices clients actually buy. A straightforward 45 m² loft top-up holds about five hours — $397, roughly $9 of labour in every square metre — because an open loft is the fastest shape this trade has. A room’s wall insulation at about six hours is $477, a full day is $636, and the survey and assessment visit — the two hours that find the damp, the wiring and the ventilation problems before you price them — is $159, with rolls, blown fibre and boards always billed as their own lines. The per-metre figure is a check on open work, never the quote itself: the moment access tightens, the hours say so, and the price follows the hours.
