Drywall Installer Hourly Rate Calculator

This free calculator works out the hourly rate a self-employed drywall installer should charge for their time, starting from the income you need, then builds the room, ceiling and per-sheet prices clients actually pay out of the hours the work really holds. Clients rarely buy “an hour of drywall”; they buy walls that paint flat, ceilings with no visible joint, and a room handed back ready for the decorator. The boards, joint compound and screws are materials, billed as their own line; the rate prices your hanging, taping and finishing hours — spread across the three visits every room quietly needs. With the honest presets below the rate lands near $85 an hour, $680 for a full day — and the jobs built from it: a one-room re-board and tape-and-joint at about ten hours, $850 — a single ceiling at about four hours, $340 — labour near $35 a sheet once the sheets are counted honestly.

The pricing reality for drywall installers

A drywall job is bought by the room and earned in three separate visits. Inside the price sit the hanging, the taping, the joint coats that have to dry between passes, and the final sand — with travel to the same room three times. A rate copied from the installer across town carries all of that whether it covers it or not. Price the hour first, and rooms, ceilings and sheets become assemblies of the same honest number.

Materials are a separate honesty. Boards, compound, tape, beads and screws are bought for the job and billed as their own line — at cost or with a stated mark-up, agreed up front. What moves your hours is not the sheet count alone but the shape of the room: ceilings, angles, bulkheads and arches all slow the work in ways a flat per-sheet price pretends away. Your rate prices the hands; the boards are the client’s, on the client’s line of the invoice.

The numbers below are starting presets, not a survey: a $50,000 target income, $11,200 a year of expenses — vehicle and fuel leads, with automatic taping tools, stilts and sanders, liability insurance, tape, compound and sanding consumables, waste disposal, phone, quoting and admin, and training — a 25% tax estimate, four weeks of vacation, a 40-hour week and 55% billable time. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $85 an hour.

Easy to miss

Costs drywall installers forget to put in the rate

  • The drying gaps. Joint compound dries on its own schedule, so one room is three trips across several days — three lots of travel, three setups, three cleanups. A per-sheet price built on one visit’s hours quietly donates the other two.
  • The sanding discipline. Dust control is time: masking, extraction, vacuuming and the wipe-down that keeps the rest of the house habitable. Skimp it and you pay in reputation; do it and it belongs in the job’s hours.
  • Ceilings are not walls. Overhead work on stilts or a tower is slower, harder and harder on the body. Price ceilings as their own shape — on these presets about four hours for a single room’s ceiling — never as wall metres that happen to be horizontal.
  • The joint the paint finds. Paint exposes what primer forgave, and the honest callback to fix a showed joint costs an hour at the worst moment. The margin is how the rate pre-pays the rare return without resentment.
  • The offcuts and the skip. Board waste is bought, carried and disposed of on your time. The materials line carries the boards; your hours carry the handling, and the disposal fee belongs in expenses where the presets keep it.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the drywall installer presets — four weeks off, 40 hours a week, 55% billable — that is 1,056 billable hours a year: the hanging, taping, jointing and sanding clients can pay for, once travel between visits, quoting and paperwork have taken theirs.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $61,200 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 25% estimate, divide by 0.75 to get $81,600 — then add your profit margin to reach $89,760 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $85, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now translate the hour into the prices clients actually buy. A full day is the day rate, $680. Re-boarding and jointing one ordinary room — walls and ceiling, start to sanded finish — is about ten hours of your time across its three visits, $850. A single ceiling on its own is about four hours, $340. Counted per sheet, your labour lands near $35 a sheet at an honest working pace of about a sheet every twenty-five minutes, hang to finish. What never works is copying the per-sheet price from the installer across town: their rooms, their travel and their drying-day gaps are not yours.

Questions

Drywall Installer rate questions

No — keep them as their own line. Board and compound prices move, room shapes differ, and a rate with materials buried in it makes a simple room look dear and a complicated one quietly loss-making. Bill materials at cost or with a stated mark-up agreed in advance. The rate stays for what it should price: your hanging, taping and finishing hours.
Quote the client the unit they understand — the room, or the sheet — but build it from your hours first. Know your real pace: on these presets, about twenty-five minutes of labour rides on each sheet, hang to finish, which is near $35 a sheet at $85 an hour. Per-sheet pricing is safe on plain rooms and dangerous on cut-up ones, so price the shape — ceilings, angles, bulkheads — and not just the count.
Usually three: hang, tape and joint, then the sanding visit once the coats have dried — with drying days between that are the material’s, not idleness. Say so when you quote, and the gap between visits reads as craft rather than delay. If a client needs the room faster, that is a different product — fans, setting compounds and longer days — priced as one.
