Makeup Artist hourly rate calculator

This free calculator works out the hourly rate a freelance makeup artist should charge, starting from the income you need — then converts it into the per-face and wedding-morning prices clients actually book. Faces are the unit, priced per person or per party — the hourly rate exists to check that those prices, across a week where the paid work clusters on event days, add up to a living. With the honest presets below it lands near $94 an hour, $756 for a full day: a forty-five-minute face prices near $70.50, and a bridal morning for a party of four near $282.

The pricing reality for freelance makeup artists

Makeup work arrives in clumps. Weddings and events land on Saturdays and in season; the weekdays between them are trials, consultations, kit cleaning, content and admin. A rate built as if every working hour sells will quietly halve itself against the real week — which is why this calculator starts from the hours that actually bill, not the hours you are awake.

The kit is the other silent partner. A professional kit holds thousands of dollars of product that expires, runs out and has to be replaced — and hygiene is not optional: disposables, brush cleaning and replacing anything that touches skin are part of the cost of being safe to book. Artists who price as if the kit maintains itself end up funding it out of their income.

The preset below starts billable time at 55%: event-day hours bill, but trials that do not convert, consultations, travel and kit care do not. The numbers are starting presets, not a survey: a $52,000 target income, $9,400 a year of expenses — the pro kit and brushes, lashes and hygiene disposables, insurance, training and the booking platform are the shape of it — and 55% billable time across a 34-hour week. With those starting numbers the calculator lands near $94 an hour.

Costs makeup artists forget to put in the rate

  • Kit replacement and expiry. Foundations, mascaras and liquids expire whether they were used or not, and the shades clients ask for change. A kit is a stockroom with a shelf life, not a one-off purchase.
  • Hygiene disposables. Single-use applicators, lashes, sponges, brush cleaner and sanitiser are spent on every face. They are small per client and non-negotiable — skipping them is not a saving, it is a risk.
  • Travel and early starts. A 5 a.m. bridal call means the working day starts in the dark and the afternoon is gone. Fuel, parking and the hours on the road belong in the maths, not in your goodwill.
  • Trials that don't convert. Trials take product, time and travel, and not every trial becomes a booking. The ones that do have to carry the ones that didn't.
  • Training and staying current. Techniques, products and looks move on; courses and practice time are how the rate stays worth paying. They belong in the year's expenses.
The maths

How this calculator works

Start with the hours you can genuinely sell. Take 52 weeks, subtract your vacation weeks, multiply by your hours per week, then multiply by your billable percentage. With the makeup artist presets — three weeks off, 34 hours a week, 55% billable — that is 916 billable hours a year: the event-day hours left once trials, travel, kit care and admin have taken theirs.

Next, work out what those hours must bring in. Add your desired income and your annual business expenses together — $61,400 on the presets — gross the total up for tax by dividing by one minus your tax rate — at a 22% estimate, divide by 0.78 to get $78,718 — then add your profit margin to reach $86,590 and divide by your billable hours. That final number, $94, is the rate below which the year stops adding up.

Now convert it into the units clients buy. One face at about forty-five minutes prices at $70.50. A bridal morning — the bride plus three more faces, about three hours of work — is $282. A trial at a full hour is $94. Quote the per-face price as the per-face price — but check it against these hours with your real diary: if event days are fewer than the presets assume, the same prices stop adding up, and it is the fill of the calendar, not the price list, that needs the work.

Disclaimer: This is a planning estimate, not tax advice. Tax rates, deductions and allowances vary by country, state and business structure. Enter the rate you expect to pay, and check significant decisions with a qualified accountant.
Questions

Makeup Artist rate questions

Per face or per party, priced from the hour. Clients book a face, a trial or a wedding morning, not a timer — but every booking has a time, and the price should follow it: on these presets, a forty-five-minute face is $70.50 and a three-hour bridal morning for four is $282. If your per-face prices imply much less per hour than your rate, either the prices or the number of event days you are counting on has to change.
Because the paid work clusters. Weddings and events fill event days; the weekdays around them go to trials, consultations, travel, kit cleaning and the admin of running the diary. A little over half of a 34-hour week billing is a realistic start — price as if every hour sold, and the rate quietly halves against the real week.
As part of the booking, not as a favour. Travel time is working time that cannot be sold to anyone else, and a 5 a.m. start spends the whole day, not just the morning. A minimum booking — half a day is $376 on these presets — plus travel charged openly or built into party prices keeps event mornings honest; absorbing both silently is how busy artists end up underpaid.
